I'm looking into doing some sort of volunteering placement abroad next summer in somewhere like South Africa. In a children's orphanage or something along those lines. There's so many websites ect which are all quite expensive. Does anywhere know any charities or organisations which are safe/ and relatively cheap to volunteer abroad with? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'm going to Costa Rica this summer with Raleigh International to volunteer on community projects, but other people are going to places such as Tanzania and Borneo. However, you mentioned you wanted to volunteer in an orphanage and the issue is that Raleigh's projects are what the community needs, so I'm likely to be building houses or creating water supplies and then helping the community at night by teaching English for example, but I won't know what I will be doing until I go out there, as they won't know what the community needs at that time until that time! It is slightly more expensive than other organisations, but it is highly reputable (many members of the royal family have volunteered with Raleigh) and I would highly recommend Raleigh as their pre-departure support is great, and I'm sure in-country support and post-expedition support will be the same

If you're worried about cost, Raleigh International are part of a government scheme called International Citizen Service which is partially funded by the government. Other companies do it as well so they may specialise in different things. Just google it and you'll find out loads about it. Good Luck!

That's a really good idea but 10-12 weeks? Don't you only get 6 off?

yeah like others have said. check out ICS and participating charities (6 I think, including Raleigh)

I'm off to India in 10 weeks. I have to raise at least £800. They believe raising the money is important and do NOT want you just earning the money. The people awareness thing is key.
