My dentist told me to wear my retainer for 13 hours in the evening/night. But everywhere I look, 20-24 hours are recommended for the first few months. Is there any reason why my dentist would have suggested fewer hours?

Your teeth don't require the recommended amount because they're better aligned already? That'd reduce the need for the time spent wearing them.
