How do you know when to use a platinum electrode or one that is the same metal as the solution that it's in?

For example, on the jan 2010 paper q. 2bi, why is the electrode in the iron solution platinum and not Iron?

    thanks

Pt is used when a catalytic surface is needed, such as for two ions in solution, or a gas and ions in solution.
