I'm not going to respond to any of the posts directed towards me re: "but why??", as I feel we've moved on.

I will however address this statement, as I am a strong atheist:

The point is not that you are happy in not believing in a god, but that people in general are happier when they believe in one.

People want answers. Apparently having a god that takes care of it all, and has done so from the very beginning is satisfying enough.

People want to "be part of something". The religious community, particularly the Christian sect is international and certainly gives you a sense of validation and purpose. If holding hands and praying to a being of faith gives you that, of course.

If something terrible happens to you, you can rationalize and say it was "as he intended", "god works in mysterious ways" etc. If your suffering is simply part of gods "higher plan", you'll feel blessed to be part of it as opposed to, you know suffering.

If someone close to you dies, they are taken to a magical place where you'll meet them when it's your turn to do the same. Suddenly death doesn't seem so bad. Speaking of death, faith removes the fear of death and the nothingness that occurs thereafter. The idea of not existing when you pass away is something the average person can not and does not want to comprehend. It's easier if you feel you have an immortal life in the clouds waiting for you when that moment arrives.

In essence, being happier as a result of religious beliefs is rationalization/delusion.

Sorry to go off topic guys, and for the wall of text but I had to address the correlation between happiness and faith. The potential happiness for being religious is by no means an indicator that you should be. Your decision to believe (or not) should be made after thinking critically on the subject.

However no way am I going to manage a year, I'm not going whole hog and abstaining, just want to cut down significantly from where I am (which I think is borderline sex addiction to fitspo ) so this doesn't take over my life

If you do your research, higher rates of masturbation are significantly correlated to problems like depression.
Plus there is some evidence that begins to causally support what I'm saying. I have already linked it. Masturbation is hormonally less satiating than sex (4x to put a number to it) and that has implications.

Believing in God will make you happier. There is strong evidence supporting the correlation. No idea what you're trying to say here... seems a bad analogy.
Very interesting. I think my mind's been rewired in the last 3 years negatively; whether that's by the Internet, lack of sleep, general increased stress or whatever I don't know

It's so addictive right! Sort of the same for me, I have other stuff to do which I'd much rather do really, but don't yet see the point in doing them
part of why I just joined NoFap. 'Not seeing the point' is a red flag imo

Also guys, for the purpose of this thread would fitspo/Google count as a form of porn? (As I'm not actually addicted to porn yet but as I'm in a relationship this is worse in some ways 0_0 she is on holiday for 6 weeks tbf )

Motivation outside the internet is a BIG giveaway. If you feel meh until you sit in front of the computer, you have a problem. The IAT tests for this as well.

If it's not real and it turns you on, it counts as porn.

I mean I struggle to get a proper hard-on in my pants when walking by, even if someone passes who I 'should' think is drop-dead gorgeous, or once would have. The intellectual impetus for desire's there but not the emotion or physical sensation
