Well, it isn't so much abstaining, as it is a redirection of energy. So, in such a case of redirection, it will be healthy and beneficial. However, if it's just pure and oppressive abstinence (maybe, in a religious sense), then it may become detrimental.
I am not being critical just curious: do you think that libido is some Freudian sexual energy that can be shaped? It sounds to me like you believe that masturbation makes you less energetic to do let's say sports or flirting with the opposite sex.

Repressing healthy and natural urges is definitely a different way of experience existence. I just don't think it is a very healthy one.
Redirection of energies? Are you one of those who think that masturbating drains your energy? Also, dominance? The idea looks great but the more I write about your intentions the less great it looks. Self-control implies repression, but repression does not necessarily imply self-control.
Good luck with the endeavour, anyway!
But it's not an oppressive repression. It is a positive challenge and exercise in self-control. Masturbation does drain some energy. You cannot seriously say that having ejaculated, you are up and motivated to run a marathon? Why do you think some sports clubs and professional athletes and boxers and whatnot have a rule to not partake in any sexual activity prior to meets or competitions etc - it isn't just some random pseudoscientific thing; there would actually be more of an abundance of certain chemicals (such as dopamine) that have to do with motivation and drive.

I can't see why so many people are being against this (although we do have much more that are for, as displayed by the sheer number of the list) - it only seems like a justification for your tugging (of which, I'm not saying that it is wrong in itself).

It isn't some Freudian sexual energy. Sexual energy and libido result from levels of certain chemicals and neurotransmitters in the brain and body. Such chemicals and whatnot, also overlap in general motivation and general drive and energy (like dopamine for example). There isn't an infinite amount of such chemicals, much like we do not have an infinite lifespan and they can be depleted if things are overdone.

Therefore, abstaining intelligently (that is, not repressing oneself oppressively) will result in a greater abundance of the aforementioned chemicals than when not abstaining; thereby resulting in greater energy, drive, motivation and productivity than times of non-abstinence.

I'll give this a go. In Newcastle there is no shortage of women who'll allow you to put it in them so it'll lead to a drop in standards and much entertainment and joy for my flatmates.

If I had saw this thread 20 minutes ago, I'd be involved. I've been without rubbing one out was about 4 weeks when I was on holiday. And about 2 months when I just didn't feel like it.
I could easily last for 3 months if I really wanted to.

When I want to redirect, I do press ups to tire me out.

    Alright, my fapprofile:
    Start: 03/01/2013
    Relationship status: single
    Prospects: unlikely
Reason for imposed self-torture: I've not been experiencing negative effects from porn use or masturbation, but will-power behaves like a muscle, and now I want to enter into the major leagues.

I feel like I'm part of a movement; men collectively giving the finger to irrational primal desire. I love it. Can't believe I'm not going to masturbate until 2014. I haven't gone longer than a month since I was 9.

I love the idea of having given this up on a whim just to see if I could. Failure's not an option. I've just removed Chrome, my porn browser. Last year it was meat, this year it's masturbation, next year ???

I do have a girlfriend, but it's a LDR when I'm at Uni... (and I last saw her yesterday, and haven't taken care of myself since). So I will be experiencing a similar level of challenge as you single men!

For all you single men, use the testosterone boost from not ejaculating to go out and work on your game!

Well, masturbation is a physical activity. I wouldn't say that after playing some basket for a couple of hours I would run a marathon. Masturbation drains your energy but so does any physical activity. Masturbation does indeed deplete some vitamines etc. However, this depletion is minimal and in no way affects normal physical performance. Furthermore, it seems like masturbation might prevent prostate cancer. I have nothing against something that is as natural (yet not necessarily essential) as eating walnuts which have a good range of benefits and no downsides (provided you don't over-eat). Masturbation is no different.
That being said, I think that as an exercise of self-control it is a good idea. However, a year is excessive for beginners. Self-control is a cognitive ability which adapts like a muscle, if you want to build up you need to do it bit by bit over a long time, rather than burning yourself out in the gym for a week.

    Possibly because that woman

    1. Has a horrible face.
    2. Likes Anime and Heavy Metal enough to talk about them.
    3. Says Jinxy far too much for the ear of the common man.

That would be an easy, if expensive, long term solution but there's a reason my V Plates are still nailed on and I've had to come to the conclusion that it's not just my high standards.
