It wasn't me who actually wrote that, but I'll answer anyway from experience.

Whilst it is true that after only the first week of no fapping, test and libido increase greatly, this doesn't mean that such levels will then decrease thereafter. Indeed, they may continue increase. From experience, they actually did greatly increase with regular periods where I was actually quite manic with so much energy, motivation and whatnot.

But over the course of time, test is bound to be stable, although increased - depending on how you play it (if you just don't do much, it might actually decrease - say, if you're depressed or something). But if you're exercising and constantly oogling girls in real-life, it's bound to rocket up regularly, leaving you in a grand state of manliness!
At least it seems I'm more focused on revision...having said that I should really be revising right now

Does sex count in this no fap thing? I'm seeing my girlfriend in about a week after not seeing her for a month, so obviously we're going get down and dirty.
You can have as much sex as you want . This is just about doing without self-generated orgasms.

That's good, my previous record is around 3 weeks so I'm looking to smash that by at least a month.

Has anyone seen Your Brain On Porn? It's by Gary Wilson, the guy in the Ted video posted earlier.

I think it's quite eye-opening - it seems clear to me that porn addiction is rife today, and if you can't go a week without it, then you probably have a problem! He says that it usually takes three to four months to start seeing the improvements in your life that come of quitting porn, but can take much longer, especially if you've been watching porn from a young age.

I'm still safely in the game! I had serious doubts this morning, though
    What improvements?

    Surely it gets easier?
Once again, it would depend on how you play it. However, living in such a highly sexual society, it will of course be harder than being a monk living in the mountains.

But from experience, whilst test and libido were rocket high even after months, I had since learned to channel that energy into raw energy and motivation and so when I got horny I no longer thought of tugging as the energy and horniness just added to my accumulated confidence and motivation and drive over time. The longer you go, the higher you willpower should be and the stronger your self-control should be (again, that is if you play it right).

Yes, but then again, if one plays it right, such feelings could play to one's advantage - e.g. brain is more saturated with chemicals and neurotransmitters (so natural highs would be more achievable and regular, feel more happy and upbeat regularly etc etc).

In fact, from experience, I'd say improvements show up much, much more quickly - however that could be 1) because of the mindset that I held or 2) because I only came into tugging and porn at 16 (relatively late compared to others) and so was less susceptible.

One of the problems with reddit is if you are inattentive you can click things and it can be awkward/annoying

Here's one I made earlier (although I'm not quite sure if it as coherent as I wanted it to be or if it makes clear certain points):

    Spoiler:
    Show
Now, I'm not saying tugging to porn is bad (whilst many may think so); however, it would help to take a step back and look at this in an impartial scientific and psychological manner.

Now, I introduce our friend "dopamine" to you, the so-called pleasure/motivation chemical amongst other things. Amongst other chemicals and neurotransmitters, dopamine is what keeps you fairly upbeat - indeed, it's what keeps you from killing yourself (alongside serotonin). Some of you may remember the film "The Happening" starring Mark Wahlberg where people just start killing themselves for no apparent reasons (I won't go into the details) - anyway, certain things are mentioned during the film about how the different levels of certain chemicals and neurotransmitters basically caused people to just kill themselves.

So, for example, if you're depressed, you're probably suffering from a temporary or longer-term decrease in serotonin and other chemicals (depending on how long your depression is for). If you're feeling demotivated and apathetic, say to revising for that exam or doing that research, then (apart from any other psychological factors and whatnot), you're most likely suffering from a decrease in dopamine levels.

However, too high dopamine levels can also be detrimental, whereby if their really, really high, you just become manic which may be beneficial at times but won't help you settle down quietly and do that revision or finish off that essay. In fact, in those circumstances, you might as well go out partying or hyper-socialising and you wouldn't even need any alcohol to supplement!

Anyway, so we've now met our friend dopamine (and our other friend serotonin briefly).

Now, when you do a pleasurable and fun activity, a large amount of dopamine (amongst other things) is released. So, for example, for those of you who play some video games, you'll undoubtedly find them fun and exciting and pleasurable. For example, some years ago, I was on the video game bandwagon and indulged in GTA many-a-time.

Anyway, when a large amount of dopamine is released, it is associated with the activity you are doing at the time and your brain becomes greatly tuned to such an activity/such activities and begins to want more of it, mostly likely at the expense of other things (like important things, such as academics and whatnot). So, the next time you're trying to revise or complete that essay and just feel like "oh, I'd rather be playing or watching so-and-so" or whatever or the next time you find that you have no interest or motivation in doing revision or writing up that essay, you'll understand why - because your brain would rather be doing that pleasurable activity (even though academics and intellectual activities can also be pleasurable and fun, but current society is much more technological and no longer emphasises so much on such activities).

In short, dopamine is also related to addiction or addicition-like feelings/mindsets. So, for example, if you were shocked upon reading the OP that some people are actually going to stop tugging for some time, this most likely means that you may be addicted or at least tied to it. If you find that you can't even go a day or two without tugging, this is because your brain is drawn to tugging/porn and constantly wants that desire fulfilled.

So, if you can't go without tugging for a day or two, the question you must ask yourself is "Why"? Addiction and non-addiction is black and white. There are varying degrees. Most likely, many than you would think are mildly addicted to tugging/porn (certainly porn these days) but would laugh if you ask them to try to stop for at least a week.

So, why not try for a week? Only then will some of you see, that there may indeed be an issue.

Well, because it's hard to find a decent non-porn-using control group, I'm not sure about any proof of the matter. But...

    • People who stop using porn report a reduction in depression and social anxiety which they thought was simply a part of their personality.
    • Related to the first point, people say that their self-confidence increased dramatically when they stopped using porn.
    • People report that their interest in real-life men and women is heightened - not necessarily just because of an increased libido, but because the way they view people's appearance isn't so heavily influenced by the bodily ideals pushed by porn as well.
    • People somehow feel like they're appreciating every day real life a lot more. I'm not fully sure why. They could just be spending more time on hobbies, interests and socialising because they don't want to sit at home and masturbate. They might actually be more mentally involved with what they're doing because their brain isn't nagging them to get back to some porn and tug.
    • People often seem to say that their thoughts become "sharper" and "clearer", but I don't really understand what they mean. I'm hoping I'll find out!

There are many more benefits listed on the site (in accounts from people who have quit), but these are the ones that seem to crop up most frequently and consistently.

On his videos on the site (I'm really upping the site because it's interesting; visit it!), he mentions a lot of the changes people see in their lives, but really his main interest is the neuroscience, and educating people about the fact that porn addiction exists and is becoming a seriously prominent issue.

All of those points especially apply to my past experience when tugging and porn have been stopped! I just appreciate the little things in life more and everything is clearer and brighter.

Have you watched the movie "Limitless"? Well, basically, I become like the main character, but without the drugs.

Life just seems so much more enjoyable and I'm happy most of the time and able to cope with deadlines and manage stress and keep calm under pressure and whatnot.

Don't worry, you're safe. It was accidental, not deliberate. But do be careful. I also banned porn in the challenge because (whilst others also want to stay away from porn as well) it would only make not tugging much much harder.

    (Original post by truthisevil)
It may well have been a combination of the two factors! That's reassuring to hear though!

Also, sorry to bother you but I don't think my name's in the OP. I started on the 6th
My mistake. How strange that I missed you - I thought I'd gotten everybody by now. In any case, I'll have you up there in a jiffy!

I think it can be difficult if you cannot talk to your peers about it, since lots of people make masturbation jokes but don't seem to talk seriously about it. This thread is good in the fact that we do not know each other (or do we?) and so can feel it is 'anonymous' as such.

Some random tips which may or may not work. Put on some music that you have no sexual relations with, if that makes sense? I just put on some French music currently as I'm studying the language, although it does not make much sense to me as I'm not that fluent yet. If you are playing the music from YouTube like myself, then try to avoid it being some hot person if you can, especially if you are at the beginning of no fap. Otherwise minimise the window and carry on listening, if you have no sexual connection with his/her voice.

I've also realised that if I have not fapped in a while, then I'm feeling crazy and on fire with so many tasks. I go politically crazy at my students union fortnightly council meetings, start firing off emails and all sorts. However, I also know that when I feel like I've done so much and just want to relax, that is when I fail as I cannot seem to think about anything else.

I'm going to be participating in a sports trial soon and will need all the energy I can get. Going to be on a fixed diet they provide and will need to run 90 minutes at a constant speed one day and the following day give blood samples every 30 minutes. That's going to be tough. What annoys me most currently is that I have a foot energy for nearly 1.5 months now and hopefully it will heal soon but that means I've been out of sports for a while. I get really restless.

I hope no one minds me writing random stuff, just keeping myself occupied and trying to fall asleep very soon. Got a lot of work to do tomorrow before my first French exam on Wed, then another on Thursday and two on Friday. Hoping for an early start again. I've found a good spot on campus to hide out with few distractions. The library is just not as productive for me. Went there this afternoon and you can guess what starts happening. Even though my uni has a high male:female ratio, it feels like you are surrounded by more females than males all of a sudden.

Hopefully I can sleep well tonight. Why? As one of the international students are back, and this guy loves to wake up at 5 am every day and go cycling, which I have no problems with. But what I do have a problem is that he can make a lot of noise without knowing it and apparently I should just tolerate it. There has been odd occasions where he is on the phone at 5 am speaking in his normal tone of voice which is quite loud. So in short, I wake up, and have trouble getting back to sleep, and so have fapped away numerous times due to this reason to fall asleep. Fingers-crossed I don't need to resort to this, as I'd love to be alert for my exams this week.

Anyway, take it easy everyone and hope you all have a productive day tomorrow. Bonne nuit.
