Braces

I've got a question about braces for anyone who has got them or has had them in the past. My orthodontist told me that if I drink fizzy drinks and/or fruit juice then when you get the braces off you will have brown marks on your teeth, I just wanted to know did anyone drink fizzy drinks when they had braces and did it effect your teeth when you finally got the braces off?

well the first time I got my braces off I drank coke, ate sweets etc and I didn't have any marks, but all I can say is that you have to brush your teeth regularly and properly to make sure you dont have the little marks left.

Just brush them thoroughly and regularly. No dramas.

I did and I had no marks on my teeth, only diet coke though, that is what my othodontist recomended

To be honest, I wouldn't touch anything like coke or sprite (or anything fizzy for that matter) as all it does is rot your teeth - you don't want to spend 3 years with braces on, only for all your enamel to disintegrate in your thirties...

The high sugar level in fizzy drinks can also weaken/break down the wires and elastic bands that the orthodontists use, meaning frequent breakages and trips back to the surgery to get it sorted out.

With regard to staining, as long as you keep your teeth squeaky clean (brushing 3 times a day minimum - at least after every meal so the brackets don't get filled up with debris) whilst you've got your braces on, you *should* be ok...

brushing too much as well can actually wear away the enamel as well so you can't neccessarily say that. On a further note, use any other essentials which the orthodontist gives you like "Gel-Kam"

What about fizzy drinks such as the Perfectly Clear drinks? It's just fizzy water with no sugar or anything at all in so I should be alrite drinking that shouldn't I? And I brush my teeth at least twice a day and regularly use mouthwash as well. The dentist also reccomended there brush things which you push between the brace and it gets bits of food out.

Just do what your orthodontist has instructed, I'm sure you've spoken of the aftercare of your braces? - If not just give the practice a phone call and ask just incase.
