Smoking and Weightloss

Does smoking make you lose weight? I remember reading an article in a magazine about a year or so ago, saying that it was the new fad with models to smoke loads so that they didn't eat. My mum, who has a medical background, has also said to me that its only those that chain smoke and don't eat that are thin, otherwise it leads to putting on alot of weight.

If you smoke say 1 or 2 a day, is that likey to have a negative effect on your weight?

I need to lose weight. I occasionally smoke, because I enjoy it, not for any other reasons. I realise the other implications for my health, and so I can weigh it up for myself. This is another factor that might make me reconsider though.

Does smoking make you gain weight?

smoking does make u less hungry, however!!! as soon as u stop smoking ull put a loadz of weight on......
Don't smoke to lose weight. Thats a myth all the way back from the fifties when they weren't aware of the effects smoking has on your health. They don't put things like "Smoking Kills" on cigarette packets for fun.

And that needed to be anonymous why?

Yes, Nicotine is an appetite supressent, but then again so is diet coke or whatever, so you may as well drink that or something

It's not a "new fad" - it's always been done. Smoking suppresses your appetite so these models can continue to stay unhealthily thin.
If you want lose weight, just do it the proper way. Diet and exercise.

But not excessively :p:

I really didn't mean this to sound like " I want to smoke to lose weight". What I meant was more "I don't want to smoke if it's likely to make me put on weight". I did once try smoking to make me less hungry.. All it did was make it a bit worse!
You don't want to smoke full stop.

Thats a decision I can make on my own. I was just wanting to know extra facts that might aid my decision, not have it made for me.
I can't see why anyone would wanna smoke.....Its not the most attractive of habits...

(On a side note: I have my first shiny-Yay!!!!!)

People who smoke are on average 3kg less than those who do not
but this is NOT a way to lose weight or become 3kg less since the health problems you'll get from smoking are far more serious

If you smoke a lot you will have less of an appetite, yes.

You will also have yellow teeth, yellow nails and one day, probably lung cancer.

I don't think smoking occasionally will have enough of an effect on your appetite to make you lose weight.

Well, thats your opinion and has nothing to do with the OPs question.

Back to the original topic, I never noticed a difference when I smoked. It is an appetite surpressent, but I always found I craved a cigarette after meals or while drinking.

....and where does that information come from?
I was going to do this but it's just not worth it. Yes, you may loose appetite and some weight. But also if you quit you are more or less guaranteed to put it all, and more, back on. You also have to deal with the fact of possible cancers, yellow teeth, smelling of nicotine from your nails and your hair, and the fact that smoking is actually quite expensive. Not worth it. Just chew some gum and drink diet coke.
Ok, smoking can surpress your hunger. My dad recently stopped and he's put on a bit of weight.
So you're deliberating over whether to be slightly over your ideal weight, or to be smelly, out of breath and those other health implications etc? Well, the choice is yours

Surely the fact that it's killing you is more of a deterrant?
