Buckingham is private (independent), Buckhinghamshire New isn't. That's the main difference!
Buckingham is IN Buckingham (or near it), in the north end of the county. It's private.

Bucks New Uni, is in High Wycombe, in the South of the county, on the London-Birmingham Chiltern Railways route, and specialises in design, media etc type courses.
Locally, it's a bit of a joke to be honest... 'Doesn't matter if I fail my A-Levels, I can go to Bucks New'

Buckingham University is a private not for profit reasearch and teaching university. Which was granted full university degree awarding status in 1983. It's unique selling point is that degrees are completed over 2 years rather than the traditional 3 years, that means there are no long summer holidays. It status as a private university means that student loan funding for tutition fees is limited to £6000 per year rather than the £9000 for Government funded universities. That means the student has to make up the short fall between the maximum student tutition loan and the (currently) £11,960 yearly fee. But then you save on accommodation costs, beacuse the course is only 2 years long for the 8 term course. The university is not subject to the £9000 a year tutition fee cap that Government funded universities are limited to, because of its private/independent status.

I think originally Buckingham University did not participate in league tables, now they do and they perform in the top half of the most tables. They score well for small class sizes and have been able to attract research funding.

Buckinghamshire New University is a relatively university, only granted university status in 2007. It is Government funded, so the full cost of tutition will be covered by a student loan (for those eligible students) and fees are capped at £9000. Undergraduate courses are the standard 3 years long. It is a teaching rather than research university, which means in many league tables it will be towards he bottom. It has its specialities (Nursing being one), so if it offers what you need, then league tables are less important.

Difference between Buckingham University and Buckinghamshire new university?!

Hello, Heather here from Central Marketing at Buckingham.

Edjunkie has hit the nail on the head.

Basically because we aren’t government funded and because our students fees are not subsidised by the government we are not subject to the same government regulation as other universities. So for instance we are not subject to government caps and the government can't tell us how to spend our money or what research we should be doing. Also, because we are a not-for-profit charity any profit we do make is reinvested in to the University and its facilities; for us our students are our customers.

From my experience of picking up a few misdirected queries for Bucks New University I gather that they offer some vocational courses such as nursing and aeronautical related subjects; at Buckingham we offer quite traditional subjects taught in four academic schools Business, Humanities, Law and Science, Medicine and Dentistry.

Hope that helps to clarify.

Heather.
FRAUDULENT UNIVERSITY NAMES
How was the Buckingham New university allowed to call itself this. Creating confusion and damaging the international name of the well established Buckingham University. Thought there was a law called "passing off" preventing this. Is it because the original is successful and private....so the politics of envy ?

How are Oxford New University, Cambridge New University and Yale New University getting on. Where does it end.

Bucks New University....get yourself your own real name.....find a sponsor
