Hi Deelow

Im currently doing unit 1 looking for a study buddy
Great!

This is what I am struggling with at the moment.

"2.3 Evaluate how our own attitudes, values and behaviour could impact on work with children and young people."

How about you?

Hi I’ve just received my package from De Montford for Level 3 and feeling a bit excited but nervous about starting it as I’ve not studied for over 30 years lol! Definitely would love to have a study buddy for some support as studying at home with two little ones is going to be eventful! 🤣

Hi Deelow and Saf28,I’m doing level 3 as well, just started. Have not found the topics too difficult yet, just make sure you use the text book to help you How have you found doing the volunteer work? I volunteered for one morning a week from October to Christmas break, and now I’m one day and one morning each week. I’m finding it really hard to find my feet in the classroom, I think it’s because of the volunteer aspect, I get sight of the plan and given tasks, and I guess it must be hard for the teacher and other TA to get the balance right. I am a very organised type of person but find myself totally unorganised in the classroom. I don’t have anywhere to put any papers / assessments I’m working on, so tend to misplace them. Really embarrassing. Does it get any easier?? Does anyone have any tips on how to improve?? Should I ask the Teacher for an informal appraisal to discuss what would help her more and me?? I can’t help but feel like I’m sometimes in the way more than I’m helpful!!!! Really really would appreciate some feedback or suggestions. Thank you in advance xx

Well I used to go 1 day a week but from next week I will start going twice a week. I have passed my first assignment.
Being a volunteer/ student and studying from home I will be relying on my supervisor/ the classroom teacher for quiet afew observation reports and witness statements. usually when you study through college your tutor will come out witnesses you doing tasks and sign off but in this case I am relying on the classroom teacher. I have found due to me being a volunteer I don’t get many task signed to me as end of the day I’m not school employee.
How many assignments have you completed?

Hello Saf28,

Thank you for your response!

I wish you well with your assignments and placement!

I have not yet submitted my first assignment, but have started working on it. Officially my course doesn’t start until February half term, but I’m hoping to get ahead of time a little bit.

The way my course is run means it’s all assignments and workplace assessments and professional discussions done by the tutor- the teacher I’ll be working with won’t have to fill in a single form. I think there will be about 8 - 10 assessments by the tutor over the year, and one written assignment every month.

At the moment I have been given responsibility for one display board in the classroom, helping with the snack prep, and I do the weekly library book exchange with the kids every Monday time willing. I look after half the class outside playing on bikes while the teaching assistant does the PSHE lesson more focused with the other half, whilst the teacher is away doing planning work as she’s given time in the week to do this. I also work with the children on some maths activities and complete assessments of their learning. I’m am really enjoying it and find it is a good amount of responsibility, but I just find it hard to stay organised in such a hectic, busy environment!! I think I’ll need a little more responsibility to pass some of my optional units but I’m feeling happier that this will be possible at the right time as I briefly talked about it with the TA I support.

I didn’t think I had much responsibility, but looking at it, I have some more than I originally thought!! What do you regularly help with? Could you ask to gradually increase some areas as time goes on?

Best wishes,

What is the title of your course?

I have got 14 assignments to do within the 14 assignments there are between 14-25 Task to complete, this includes written answers and evidence based eg discussion with teacher, observation by the teacher etc

I work with year 1 class and find the teacher to be very busy.

Will you be volunteering until you complete your course or will you be applying for TA jobs soon? You seem to have quiet abit of responsibllity therefore already have relevant experience

I know what you mean! I work in a combined class, reception and year 1. It is hectic and I don’t get much time with the teacher - I get in early in order to see her plan for the day and have a quick chat while she’s prepping stuff in the classroom.

I think I’ll be volunteering until I complete the course, it’ll be easier that way and ensure I get the qualification completed- I have 2 small children too so if I was working properly I don’t think I’d have any energy left for the written tasks!!!

I think it’s the same course, but run differently by the college I’m completing it through- I need to gather evidence for the interview style discussions that take place after each assessment in the workplace. I would have been worried about taking on a volunteer course that needed teacher input, how are you finding that? Is it easy or do you find it hard to keep up with your timetable if you’re relying on a busy person?

Hope it goes well for you anyway x

If I’m honest I’m finding it hard as for each assessment I need to do all research myself. I then tell the teacher what I need to do to complete a task, she is willing to do what I request of her but on some tasks even I don’t know what I should be looking for or what I should be doing.

My current assignment is on health and safety. I am required to do a risk assessment for one of the task. School have already carried out all risk assessments everything is in right order so I’m not sure what I should be looking out for.

I’m in a different boat from you I need to complete this course and look for a job. I can’t waste much time so every week that goes by and I feel i have not collected enough evidence for my course I feel like another week has gone to waste.

Your set up sounds good. Now is probably best time to gain qualification and experience and your not pressured for time too.
