I'm applying for an MA in Activism and Social Change at Leeds and am struggling with the statement... I really want to be on this course, it looks so suited to me.

I last studied in 2008 and have above the grade needed to get in... I am just not great at promoting myself. My undergrad degree is Human Rights and Politics.

Any tips? I have been involved in various forms of "activism" since 2003... I am struggling most with starting it and also, how to sell myself without coming across as pompous.

Try starting with a bullet point list of all the activism you've been involved in, with dates, your role, achievements etc. That will at least get you writing and might trigger more for you. Your background sounds ideal, so it could be that you don't have to do more than explain what you've already done and why you particularly want to do that MA (which should already be evident from your history of activism).

I found it easier to pick out individual modules and justify why I wanted to do them and how previous work experience and study related to it and what specific aspects of modules I'd hope to specialise in. I also had an idea of a dissertation topic, which I would actually recommend trying to weave in as it's not like they'll ever force you to do it on that topic anyway. Don't worry about coming of a pompous. I found my PS one of the most cringey things ever but hey, it worked.
