University of East London Accommodation Thread

Applying

How do I apply for accommodation?

The university will send you an email inviting you to apply for accommodation, with details of how to do so. To apply for accommodation and to pay your deposit, you will need to login to UEL Direct, UEL's student portal.

Am I guaranteed accommodation?

You are guaranteed to be accommodated by the University if you meet the guarantee criteria. To qualify for guaranteed accommodation you must be a first-year undergraduate/postgraduate student and live over 90 minutes from your campus of study. Priority is given to students who have a disability that requires them to live on campus. If you are an international student you will be eligible for a place in UEL's halls if you are studying at UEL for the first time. You can apply as soon as you have received your Confirmation of Acceptance to Studies letter from the University’s International Admissions Office and paid your deposit to secure your place. In order to meet the guarantee (UK, EU, and Non-EU students) you must have submitted an application by the deadline on the 14th August, and subsequently pay your deposit by the 19th August 2013.

What is the application procedure?

Conditional offer holders - If you have a Conditional offer you will be sent an email from UEL which will provide details of how to apply for accommodation. Once you have met your offer conditions and passed any required applicant checks you will need to pay your deposit and first rent installment (£750) to secure your room. UEL will then allocate you a room in the halls, providing you meet our eligibility criteria and subject to availability. UEL will allocate you a room within four days of receiving your application.

Unconditional offer holders - If you have firmly accepted an Unconditional offer and passed any required applicant checks you will receive an email offering you the chance to apply for a place in the Student Village by logging in to UEL Direct, UEL's student portal. To secure your place you will need to complete the online application process and pay your deposit and first rent installment (£750 in total). UEL will then allocate your room within four days of receiving your
application, providing you meet UEL's eligibility criteria and subject to availability.

Insurance offer holders - If you have accepted a conditional/unconditional offer from UEL as your Insurance choice, you will be not be able to apply for a place in UEL's Student Village at this stage. If you subsequently firmly accept an unconditional offer from UEL you will receive an email offering you the chance to apply online for a place (see above for details).

International Students - If you are an international student, the application process is the same as the Conditional Offer Holders process (see above) but please note that by paying your deposit and accepting the agreement you are committed to the tenancy regardless of any visa issues which arise.

I am a Stratford-based student; can I still stay in the Student Village?

Yes! Students from both the Docklands and Stratford Campuses can stay at the Docklands Student Village.

How do I get to the Stratford Campus from the Student Village?

Cyprus Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station is situated at the entrance to the Docklands Campus; the quickest way to get to Stratford is to take the DLR to Canning Town, then change to the Jubilee Line to Stratford. The train journey should take between 20 minutes and a short 5min walk to the University Square Stratford campus, and a 10min walk to the Stratford campus.

The Student Village

The University of East London's student accommodation called 'The Student Village' is based at the Docklands campus. The UEL Student Village is split into two main areas, the East Student Village and the West Student Village. These contain five distinct types of accommodation:

East Village

Halls of residence at the East Village?

Longbridge House, Marley House, Redbridge House, Shepherd House and Templars House

Types of rooms?

Among the newest university accommodation in London, the East Student Village is located adjacent to the new UEL SportsDock, which opened in 2012. A number of the living areas and kitchens have excellent panoramic views across the dock area. Rooms in the East Student Village have a modern, spacious feel. Each flat houses four to seven students and has a large, shared kitchen/dining area and living space. Flats are equipped with an oven, fridge, freezer and microwave and many have excellent views over the dock area. UEL also have some large, en-suite rooms specially adapted for disabled students. UEL have eleven large, en-suite rooms in the East Student Village that provide slightly bigger rooms in width. These offer greater study space for students who want a little more room, as well as the social advantages of staying in a shared-flat environment. For students who wish to live in halls but not in a shared flat, UEL have studio-style accommodation available. These self-contained studios are based in Marley, Shephard and Templars Houses and many have views directly out onto the dockside. UEL also have some adapted-access larger studios for those with disabilities.

En-Suite - Approximately 13 square metres in size. Includes: built-in single bed with enclosed under-bed storage, phone, desk and chair, bin, en-suite wet room with shower and lavatory, shelving and cupboard space, WiFi internet. £120.45 per week.

En-Suite Enhanced - Approximately 17 square metres in size. Includes: built-in single bed with enclosed under-bed storage, phone, desk and chair, bin, en-suite wet room with shower and lavatory, shelving and cupboard space, WiFi internet. £128.55 per week.

Studio - Approximately 15 square metres in size. Includes: single bed, under-bed storage, phone, desk and chair, bin, en-suite shower and lavatory, shelving and cupboard space, fridge freezer, combi oven and hob, WiFi internet. £150 per week.

West Village

Halls of residence at the West Village?

Ailsa House, Clare House, Felix House, Jamilah House and Kwame House

Types of rooms?

The West Student Village was designed by awardwinning architect Edward Cullinan in tribute to the shipping heritage of the area. The circular residences follow a nautical theme and have a unique feel owing to their distinctive shape. Each flat has three to five residents with a shared kitchen and social area. There are sixteen flats in each building. There are two studio flats, the largest rooms we offer, and these are located in Clare House in the West Student Village. These are ideal if you want a quiet area of your own in which to study.

En-suite - Approximately 10 square metres in size. Includes: built-in single bed with enclosed under-bed storage, phone, desk and chair, bin, en-suite wet room shower and lavatory, shelving and cupboard space, WiFi internet. £113.50 per week.

Studio - Approximately 30 square metres in size. Includes: built-in single bed with enclosed under-bed storage, phone, desk and chair, bin, separate shower and lavatory, shelving and cupboard space, full kitchen with fridge and freezer for your own cooking, oven and hob, a small dining area, WiFi internet. £150 per week.

Living Off Campus

Short-Term Accommodation

UEL does not offer accommodation for programmes that are shorter than a semester. However, there is a significant amount of short-term accommodation available for students in London. For further details, email the UEL Residential Services team. Some examples of short-term accomodation include Britannia City at Canada Water, YMCA Students at Canada Water and Bede House at East India Quay .

Private Accommodation

Traditionally, most second-year students move into a student house with their fellow students. UEL carries a list of local landlords, which is available by e-mail at [email protected]

Private Halls

London offers many varieties of purpose-built student accommodation provided by private companies such as Cass & Claredale, Liberty Living, Scape Student Living, Nido Student Living, Assam Place, Pure Student Living, Urbanest, and Unite. A number of local providers include Unite who have locations in both Stratford and Mile End. Scape Living have locations nearby in Greenwich and Mile End. Also Cass and Claredale Halls Association who have locations in Bethnal Green and Hackney. In this type of accommodation the length of agreement is normally a minimum of six months - or for the whole of the academic year. Accommodation is normally in clusters of flats with your own study-bedroom - sharing communal facilities with other flatmate's.

Life on Campus

What facilities are on campus?

On campus you’ll find a wide range of cafés, restaurants, shops and bars. You’ll have access to an ever-growing range of clubs and societies and a students’ union run completely by the students. UEL also has three 24 hour libraries available to students at all three campuses. On campus there is a range of places to eat and socialise:

Hi, have you made a decision yet?

I would recommend choosing the en-suite enhanced room. You have your own bedroom and bathroom and you have a shared kitchen and living room space. I have personally been in the en-suite rooms and they are very large. Also you have the benefit of having room mates and making new friends. Although the studio flats are nice, you may feel really lonely living on your own.

Take a look at these links about the types of rooms at UEL (The first one allows you to virtually look around the rooms):

Hello there  I have a few questions regarding UEL accommodation for those who know the answers to them haha
1. How are they with guests? How long can guests stay for, is it strict? Because me and my bf are in a ldr and we visit each other.

2. I saw on the website that there's east/west accommodations. When you apply can you choose betweeb thr two (east/west) accommodations? Because the west seemed worst in my opinion from the website 360 view.

Thank you

Hi!
If you read carefully this site (http://www.uel.ac.uk/wwwmedia/uel/migratedcontent/residential/documents/brochure.pdf) you can find the information you need.
You can choose between the east and the west village, and you can also choose the type of room, for example you could book an en-suit single room, or a studio or an en-suite enhanced room. The rent depends on this.
You can find the prices for 2013/2014 on this page ( http://www.uel.ac.uk/residential/how-to-apply/fees/ )

Concerning the guests I read that they can stay for 2 days, that is to say for 2 nights, but you have to fill out a form and your flatemates have to sign it. You can find this kind of information on this page (http://www.uel.ac.uk/wwwmedia/uel/migratedcontent/residential/documents/handbook.pdf) (section: Visitors and absence).
On these pages you can also find a lot of useful information.

Yes you are allowed guests to stay over. In regards to the accommodation, you can choose between either the west village accommodation or the east village accommodation. The east village is the newest of the accommodation. It was completed in 2008/2009 and the rooms are very large in terms of student rooms. I would recommend the east village out of the two as the rooms in the east village are more spacious than in the west village.

UEL accommodation brochure can be found here: http://www.uel.ac.uk/wwwmedia/uel/migratedcontent/residential/documents/brochure.pdf
I'm going to be studying at UEL this September and have been told I need a down payment of £750 for my accommodation by mid August. Does anyone know if student loans will be through by then to pay it or will I have to find the money elsewhere? Anyone studying at UEL would be mighty helpful!
Student loans won't come until you have started uni.

You will have to borrow from parents / get a student account and use the 0% overdraft / get a job / use savings

Dads blind & lives on benefits, doesn't have money to lend me, nor do I have savings. Would the overdraft on a student account cover £750?

You'll have to choose your student account wisely (and double check that they will let you use the overdraft immediately) but yes. Here's a really useful roundup of the accounts available http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/Student-bank-account

Probably ought to add that a 0% credit card could also be an option so long as (a) you are 18, and (b) you pay it all off before the 0% period ends (in practice, it's probably sensible to pay it all back as soon as your loan comes in). And don't be an idiot with it - spending money you don't have on a credit card is a seriously bad idea. Here's another guide http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/best-0-credit-cards
I have updated the cover page which now provides up to date information in regards to applying for accommodation at UEL and other relevant information. Hopefully this will be a good resource for applicants interested in accommodation at UEL. If you would like to see anything else added, then please let me know

Both  Wired internet is available in all dorm rooms, and wifi is available across both campuses. You use your UEL login details and you can access the wifi at any of UEL's campuses

I'm an international student from Minnesota (US) coming to UEL Docklands in February and I'm just curious as to how to halls are set up. I read on the website that, "Each flat houses four to sevenstudents and has a large, shared kitchen/dining area and living space." Are they just set up as four-seven bedrooms in a flat that you share?

Also. Uni Halls in the US are pretty crazy sometimes with parties and drunks, I'm just curious as to how the Uni Hall life is at UEL. Are there parties and alot of drunk people, are the Uni Hall Resident Assistants strict with rules, what do alot of people do for fun?

Sorry if this sounds ignorant and stupid, I'm just curious and want to see what it will be like.

Most of the apartments range from four to seven room mates depending on what apartment type you choose. However, you get your own individual bedroom which includes your own bathroom and a desk area so you can do your work. You then have a shared kitchen and living area which you share with your room mates. These apartments are very large though especially the apartments in the east village, so you don't have to worry about privacy or being cramped up. If you would prefer not to share an apartment with anyone, UEL does offer individual apartments but these are more expensive.

In terms of parties, yes just like all university campuses, there are parties. There is security on campus, but as long as things don't go out of control or if you don't receive lots of complaints, then they are usually very laid back in terms of parties on campus. There are also two uni bars on campus too.

Lots of people tend to go into central London during the weekends and evenings as the campus is so close to central London. There is so much to do in London that you will never be bored!

Hi, I previously lived in the Student Village last year but due to a missed deadline in February I got a message that I cannot apply anymore for a room this year, anybody else had a similar issue and managed to go back there though?

This entire situation with UEL halls is stressing me out. I recently got offered a place during the application day however still can't apply as I haven't received my username or anything, then having to wait to find out if I get in gives me little to no time to find an alternative place to live PLUS having to pay the £750 (which I think is ridiculous having stayed in halls previously) which I cannot afford.

UEL should of thought out the deadline for accommodation and made it after the application day.

Hi, generally most second and third year students go off and find there own private accomodation after their first year. However, I do know of a few students that have stayed in on-campus accomodation for the duration of their course for the whole 3 years. I would email [email protected] (UEL residential services team) and let them know of your situation. Also are you a home student or an international student?

Hi, contact finance.registry@uel.ac.uk and tell them that you require a UEL Direct password and username to be set up. Also, are you a first year student? and where abouts are you origionaly coming from?
