The Student Room Group

UltimateLoughboroughThread (Info on Grades at end!)

Accommodation

First choice is really catered or self-catered.
- If in catered, you will have breakfast/lunch/dinner during the week and in some halls you will also have brunch/dinner on the weekends.
- Catered halls will have a dinning room somewhere and it’s a great way to meet new people living in your halls and to socialize in general.
- Self-catered you will have a kitchen and small dinning area, once again depending on your halls.
- A good way to make sure you socialize with people in your block.

Next choice will be to live in the Student Village or not.
- The Student Village is has a total of 6 (I think) halls, some catered some self-catered.
- The most popular hall, Telford, is located in the Student Village.
- Unless you’re doing art or design, the Student Village is not too far from the majority of buildings and is very close too the Library and Mechanical Engineering.
- Be warned though, during Freshers Week… there WILL be bant!!
- Not being in the Student Village is NOT a problem though! (Bant is everywhere!)
- Unless you absolutely love a particular hall, choose one that’s near your department (e.g. If you’re doing art, DC is a good 30/40 min walk!), just to make things easier.

And just a few tips.
- Just a side note, Somerton is a hall that use to be William Morris (I shall always love you Bill Mo!)… There will be building work going on there throughout the year, so do take that into account!
- If you really want to go into a particular hall, put 3 variations of rooms on offer there on your accommodation form, for your best chance.
- It is a first come, first serve basis, so be quick with returning forms!
- If you have put 3 variations and didn’t get into your hall of choice, you will be placed somewhere! If you don’t like where you’ve been put, complain quick!
- Each hall has a different atmosphere, what one person may like, someone else might hate. Go with where you feel you would be most happiest, and you’ll love it

Socializing

The Student’s Union.
-Possibly the greatest union ever! There are 5 bars/rooms, each one with a different vibe.
- Often amazing bands and acts coming down to perform.
- Every night there’s something going on, from a quiz on Sunday, to relaxing live bands on a Thursday.
- Wednesday is Hey Ewe, which is the official athletic union night out. Most weeks it’s a fancy dress theme (e.g. commando, 70’s). It’s the night where most of the sporting people come out to celebrate, as they’ve usually won something!
- Friday is FND (Friday Night Disco), biggest night out at the union. Sometimes there’s a guest there of some sort, either way atmosphere is awesome.
- For daytime use, there’s a small café type place, book store, and a shop.

Loughborough Town.
- Various bars, clubs and pubs to suit most people’s taste.
- A good amount of shops, including Primark (we all love Primark!).
- Cinema and Pool lounge.
- Sorry, can’t seem to explain town much! But everything is there:smile: , but if you ever want to adventure out, Nottingham and Leicester are only a short train/bus journey away!

Societies and Clubs.
- There are loads of societies and clubs to join! But there is no pressure at all to actually join any.
- It’s a great way to meet new people, and each society/club will have various socials throughout the year.
- You get to have some all-important stash! Like the clubs hoody or t-shirt, wear them with pride
- There are taster days throughout the year, so you can see what a club has to offer without spending any money (you pay to join clubs/societies prices vary on each one).

IMS
- Each hall play against each other in various sports, and it’s known as IMS.
- It’s all done in good spirit and it’s great to meet people in your hall AND in others, who you may not meet in other situations!
- If, for example, you play Loughborough Hockey, it means you can’t do hockey in IMS, which gives a great opportunity for others to find potential that they thought they never had!

General

- Yes, Loughborough is a university that loves its sport, but you honestly don’t need to do anything to get along!
- No one is going to like shun you or anything if you aren’t a member in anything!
- It is a (most years) 60:40, male: female ratio across the whole university, but I am yet to find anyone who really notices, or cares!
- The Loughborough Experience is what you, and you only, make it out to be.

Sorry, didn’t realize how much I wrote! Hope it’s some sort of help to people! Like I said, add and ask, I know I didn’t include much precise information!

I don't know too much. JP is right next to William Morris, so you might have a year of building work right next to you! Harry French is about 5/10 min walk from the campus, looks nice enough. If you are sharing it is only ever with another person, so rooms of 2. JP is quite small from when i've walked through it, HF is deff larger!

wooo... that was great!! worth 1.000.000.000.000 rep!
(is that abillion? im not sure how many 0's there's ment to be... anyway, no one will ever get as much rep as big fat pig)

There aren't any shared rooms in Harry French as far as I'm aware of. Harry French is situated on Ashby Road (main road leading into town). If you are living on Harry French Court or Harry French Grove, then you'll be sharing your kitchen and bathroom facilities with 5 people (6 including urself). If you live on the other side of the road in the bigger blocks (Cedar, Chestnut and Oak), you'll be sharing your kitchen and bathroom facilities with 7 people (8 including urself). I am completely clueless about Harry French HOUSES, eg. Iffley etc. etc. even though I've been living in HF for almost 3 years!!! What I do know is that they're usually for post-grads.

Harry French is probably one of the cheaper halls, I'd definitely recommend the living quarters. In the Court (which is where most Freshers are placed unless you're doing an Art Foundation), like I said, you live in corridors of 6 ppl and you share 2 toilets and a shower which are all separate units. I've lived in Harry French for almost 3 years, I was in Cedar Lodge in my foundation yr, then in Oak Lodge for the 1st yr and both are on the other side of road/reception and have the luxury of having a bath. I'm living on Court this year which isn't so bad as rooms are better laid out at this side of hall. I do hope to live in the Grove at some point but I have a house for next year!!!
