I hope this doesn't come across as weird but I thought it was really cool that you had something that you were already so involved in (is this the app you've already put on the Play Store?) and I really wish you all the best. Where are you moving to?

But what did your parents say about 3rd year? 👀

I came across a slightly old article a few weeks ago about how much easier it is for startups to get funding in the US than here; it's kind of jarring to me seeing potentially useful ideas (subjective, I know) struggle to get £50k funding when yet another dating app can get $1m in 6 days. What's going on lol?

Okay so I went to America in August (first time lol) and I kind of fell in love with the place, like I started dreaming about my future again, all the things I could end up doing :moon:. There are so many different hotspots of just amazing work being done, it must be so nice to be a part of. Imagine living in a country that cares about engineers :rofl2:

I got to look around MIT too which was very nice because once upon a time I was going to apply there  The Mech/Civil departments looked so normal (like my uni) it was endearing, but some of the work on display in other buildings was on another level.

I enquired about grad school but to be honest I have very much cooled on the idea of further study, unless a future employer thinks I would benefit from it, and is willing to fund it

I have made a list of places to apply to over there (mostly startups) but it feels like such a long shot - they seem to be looking for people with a lot of experience - I don't know why they'd take some kid from thousands of miles away. That said, there are certainly more interesting companies here and in the EU than a few years ago, so I just need to get in where I fit in lol (that's what I tell myself, anyway :colondollar:)

In any case, my trip reminded me of where my interests lie and rekindled the flame that was very nearly extinguished, and also showed me that there are businesses working on the kinds of things I want to work on even if they aren't near me. So now... now I'm trying to learn to use something called ROS because it seems prudent but it seems like I'd benefit from knowledge of Python first, so I'll have to get on that :colonhash:

Incidentally, when you did that research placement did you have to get a J-1 visa? :beard:

Spoiler

much links

Awesome  How long did you stay there for? I totally agree about the department's being on a whole different level they just have so much more money to do stuff and that was my experience when I went to UPenn as well.

Re: Visa

Yes my uni had to pay for me to get a J-1 Visa but I wasn't allowed to work outside of my internship while I was there (which sucked because I would have tried to sneak in another engineering internship in there lol).

Life in the states is so much better honestly and engineers are actually valued properly like they should be. Not like here where you'll find an apprentice in gas repairs earning more than an actual engineer with a MEng or BEng lol. I have a friend (a girl) in the states who did a BSc in Physics she was on the same internship as me and after she did a MSc in Mech Eng now she works as a software engineer for some big company and she on like $110k starting salary..... It's mad.

Re: Old Account

I don't log on on it very often but I will fix the text, thank you for retrieving it

Re: Going to the States

It's tricky to get there ATM especially with Trump's new laws and stuff he's made it a bit more difficult for foreigners to go there. It's not impossible but if you can find a company to sponsor you it's very much possible. Also look into Canada they are a bit softer than the states and more tolerable to hiring foreigners.

My TSR activity has been kinda dead but on my masters and kinda sorta enjoying it 😅 This semester has been a drag with disorganization on the uni's part and a really crappy group project but I'll try to do a proper update in a couple weeks once my exams are done. Wish me luck y'all, didn't survive a dead UG degree just to flop this masters 😭

Not long, just a couple of weeks  but in a few different places. I really wanted to find out how people (well, mainly my relatives) live there, how they reconcile their goals & daily lives with, erm, the way the country is governed. There are still some things that might be a cause for concern if I did get the opportunity to move there, but I'm clearly getting ahead of myself lmao.

That's an interesting path tbh. Do you know why she studied Mech Eng in between? Last week I read about people who studied ME but sort of shifted their focus towards software - primarily to see if they felt that what they studied beforehand was beneficial to their current career path, and how they marketed (for lack of a better term :yucky:) themselves relative to students of e.g. other engineering streams who might be expected to have more experience programming :cyber:

Though, perhaps, that is changing.

Nice. I hope it all goes well

Do you have to do a big project like you would for an MEng? Individual or group?
I miss the old post editor. :unimpressed:
Hi! I am thinking of doing engineering in uni. I am leaning towards mechanical but I am also keeping electrical open too.
I am doing work experience over the summer so hopefully I will gain more of an insight into the one which interests me the most.

Some universities offer degrees that combine both mechanical and electrical engineering - these may be worth a look.
Wow that sounds cool! I am thinking of doing a specialisation of weapons engineering later in my career. Do you think either of the two would be better for that?

I'm not familiar with that field, but I'd imagine it would depend on whether you were more interested in electrical or mechanical elements.
K cool thanks for your help!!!

After like 2 years I decided to check this thread out. How's going the original og's @a10 @+ polarity - and the rest! I personally failed 3rd year of aerospace and decided to drop out after that. But it was for good reasons! I started a software startup in the start of 3rd year and basically did that instead of going to lectures. We got some money and are now moving to the usa. What you guys up to

nice well done
Note to future MSc students: Never start a masters critical lit review 3 days before a deadline (I now have to read about 10+ research papers in the space of 48 hours and produce a document summarising it all to my research)

Fml.

p.s. thank god I'm not doing a PhD i would kill myself

Thanks man, hope you good in LA! I just found out today that the company that rejected me are now advertising the same role again.

It looks like the other guy they interviewed after me rejected them lmao . Its absolutely made my day because it was a real negative experience for me so **** them

I agree on the recruiters, one made me waste £200+ lying to me that I was going to get reimbursed for travel to a final interview ffs!!!
