i am currently a first year psychologist at durham

the course is pretty competitive to get onto because it has lower offers than a lot of universities of its standard - i had an ABB offer (last year offers ranged AAB to ABB) meaning more people are likely to apply than if all offers given were AAA or AAB. A lot of people predicted lower grades seem to get offers from the Applied Psychology course at the Stockton campus (not actually in durham, not the same nightlife or feel to it at all) rather than the straight psychology course. If you look at the number of students applying and the number of offers given, i'm sure any universities in the top section would have a pretty similar ratio.

in terms of how well respected, anything from Durham University is highly regarded and they make you work bloody hard for the degree. I also had offers from York, Nottingham and Bristol (all of which were higher up in the league tables for the course), and Sheffield and Manchester but I picked Durham cos both the academic and social side of the university is good (despite the **** clubs!) and you get to know so many more people than at other universities due to the collegiate system. The actual psych department isn't huge - probably about 75 psychologists in a year, but due to elective modules and combined arts/natural science/social science students theres actually about 300 people in the lectures (gd cos you don't get picked on!) but its still really friendly and the course is interesting.

Well from what people were saying at the Psychology open day at York, there were a lot of people who got offers from all their choices apart from Durham, me included. So that suggests it's very competitive as York is one of the top courses in terms of league tables!
