In a mixmag article that my boyfriend read, it said that smoking pot isn't legal over there anymore for tourists. the locals are still allowed but apparently they are cracking down on tourists, going over there and just getting high. I too was wanting to go there but upon hearing this I think I might not. I suggest you try visiting an Amsterdam web-site to find out for sure. I mean is there really any point going to amsterdam if you can't get high in a cafe?
It is legal following the licensing of coffee shops to sell cannibis in the early 90's.

I think this is the main reason students go to Amsterdam  If it hasn't been mentioned i'd recommmend the Rijksmuseum.

Rijksmuseum is undergoing major building works 2004-2008. You can go in and see a "greatest hits" in a few rooms still open but it is a bit pricey for what you get.
In response to an earlier post - definitely fly don't drive. Because so many Budget airlines go there it is very cheap if you book ahead and avoid Friday/Sat outbound. There are lots of trains from the airport to the city centre - costs 3 Euros.

Little hint, if you go organise to go home on the saturday, so maybe leave wed or thurs, you can get a flight back for about 15squid, nobody leaves 'dam on a Saturday. EasyJet are a bit of a rip off if flying last min tho, could only get a flight for 110, and they were crap times (v.early in the morn), with expedia ive got good BA flights and 2nites 3* for 170, which is pretty kewl
