I've never brought my iPad or laptop to class, but I've seen a few people do it. It's probably a better idea to be honest as I usually write that make no sense and type them up and end up having to do more work trying to work out what they mean. If it works for them then whatever, each to their own.

Lots of student loan+living at home = a lot of disposable income.

I don't live with my dad (mum died when I was young) but my income is still based off his as I'm 20. I get 2200 in loans and grants each payment and while the household I live in isn't well off, they have 2 incomes. I can afford expensive things because I'm not paying 3.5k a year for rent either.

I'm planning on getting a car (finally) and building my own gaming pc (1.5k). Not spoilt but I'm claiming what I'm entitled to. If you don't do that, then it's your own fault.

Ipads believe it or not are extremely helpful for note-taking in lecturers, without the issue of running out of paper! (that being said I'm at alevel so I wouldn't know but it sounds awfully convenient)

One time when I ran out of paper, I just made iPhone notes, not ideal and have still to be copied up but it's just useful to have multiple function devices where they are available.

because they have too much money to waste, on something that will be out of date soon and a new version.

Sometimes I think back when I was like 10 when people actually lived in reality and looked out the window on the bus and see whats around them, makes me so angry when I see people watching films and stuff on their ipad on a bus or something, it's like, LOOK AROUND YOU, LOOK AT THIS WORLD, spending your life looking at a little screen is so sad

Anyone on a contract will have a smartphone since they come bundled in with almost all contracts now (except some of the pricier ones which have an added charge,) unless you are on pay as you go it doesn't make sense to not have a smartphone. I rarely see people walking around with iPads maybe it's different where you are, and laptops are more convenient than PCs, I don't have a computer I just my laptop because it achieves the exact same thing but is portable. Macbooks are just a fashion trend though, they serve no real need to a student.

I know what you mean, apparently material goods show how much better the person is over another. I have a Lenovo laptop which i bought for reliability which is more powerful than a students Macbook and cost around half the price yet he laughs at me because it doesn't look good. Thankfully i have the brains and knowledge to research what i'm buying and get the most bang for buck where as he just went for the flashy overpriced cool option.

I;m not saying its bad to have expensive gadgets or flashy ones. I'm just saying that some people buy them to have a superior feeling over others. If you buy them just because you want it/need the features/can afford it and then don't tell everyone how its better than theirs then thats ok.

I dunno. Lots of people text or facebook chat whilst they're out and about, but I prefer to have full focus on whatever I'm doing, and message people when I'm at home. If I had a phone with internet, or an ipad, I wouldn't use it.

Once I'm out of uni I'd like to use a desktop computer rather than a laptop. I wonder then whether I'll want a portable internet device like a netbook or ipad. I find touchscreens pretty fiddly though.

Sometimes I'd like my laptop at university but it's quite heavy and I don't fancy carrying it uphill for half an hour to get there but I can do without. The only reason I can really see is that they're really light and easy to carry so why not?

I'm not buying an iPad just for notetaking.

I'll probably buy an android tablet, it's cheaper and can perform the same things.
