    To answer...
    Yes there is some sort of hook holding the left end of the see-saw to the ground. You can see it if you look closely.

    Man i'm so blind. This picture has been my physics teacher's screensaver for the past 3 years and for the first time on wednesday, after a double lesson on moments he asked us to explain it.
