I'm doing my A2 English literature coursework on isolation in The Catcher in the Rye, The Bell Jar and Hamlet.
I was just wondering how strong the line of argument has to be in the essay?
Also can you talk about how the texts are reflective of the authors' lives?
Finally, if you have any tips on how to make the coursework less narrative that would be much appreciated!

    Thank you

For us (AQA B) AO1 was essentially about writing a decent essay, and this does include making some sort of argument that is relevant to the question, but it wasn't supposed to be so strong that it became one sided. But if you make a series of relevant points that lead logically to your conclusion, that will be enough.

In terms of authors, you can bring this in, but don't get carried away with it.

    Good luck!

Okay thank you for your help! I'm slightly worried because mine doesn't seem to have much of an argument at all but I'll see what my english teacher thinks.

Hey, I know how you feel!

I'm using the Bell Jar as well, but exploring the extent to which gender and sexuality contribute to the presentation of women in that and Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. I'm going to write the essay, and then if need be just adapt my question to fit it, if that makes sense?

What are you doing for the critical anthology piece?
