Just because lot's of little things go wrong, things that aren't being offset by anything positive. As things get worse individual attempts to escape the depression become more important: a certain girl that you 'love' that you think is the way out for you and it falls through.

Suicide is for people who are in a dark place and can't see any way things are goig to improve. After all, what is the point of living without hope?

Obviously when I say 'you' I mean the hypothetical person.
Because sometimes nothing is better than something.

As long as there is future, there is hope. I dont get where all the "dark places" stuff comes from. Are people so shortsighted that they cannot see a way forward? To every problem theres a solution.
And I say this to you tonight, let us not forget. There is Hope!

I think sometimes, in some situations it is not shortsightedness as much as the fact that you would need a telescope to see that hope.

To my mind it is, at best, an interim remedy.

Metaphorically speaking, would it be like being surrounded by pillars that block you from seeing the light, and they need light in order to power their solar-powered jackhammer to remove the one of the pillars?

pillar = problem
light = hope
jackhammer = problem solving skill
Profesh
To my mind it is, at best, an interim remedy.

Yeah suicide is like: " Go straight to hell, do not pass go, do not collect £200"
merely to grasp attention
Because the thought of crying themselves to sleep and then waking up to face the same horrors that made them cry in the first place is hard to swallow.

They'd rather face the blackout.

Because they have little or no faith in the supposed avenues available for them (psychological help, counselling etc.) and consider their problems as almost unsolvable.
Possibly because thats what they actually WANT. The world can be quite a depressing place, you live for an extrodinarily long time, and you get to thinking "whats the point in it all?" The end of the tunnel can be an extremly tempting prospect, depending on what your religious beliefs are.

:ditto: Life is pointless. You live, you die and eventually all evidence of your existance disappears. Besides most people seem to fear death which is quite illogical. How do we know that death isn't better than life?

Because life sucks? I don't see why anyone in their right mind who had the courage to kill themselves would bother to stay alive.
Those last two posts were just amazing.

merely to grasp attention
Absolutely not...it's not uncommon for depressives to never actually tell people about their impending suicide attempt. I attempted it last June but never told anyone about it until October, four months after it had failed. Had I turned to suicide merely to grasp attention? No. My depression had got the better of me.

I think FiL summed it up quite well with the following two quotes:
Because sometimes nothing is better than something
I think sometimes, in some situations it is not shortsightedness as much as the fact that you would need a telescope to see that hope

Its a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

I'm all alone, I'm feeling bad,
I'm by my self, all I ever had.
I hate my life, I'm such a mess,
I wanna die, I'm so depressed.
And every time I look at you,
I know exactly what to do.
I didn't want to be born, the pleasure all has died,
so now I'm gonna snuff it with a suicide.

Suicide the best, no better way
Sit in a hot bathtub, raise a blade
and slit your wrists, watch your life fade to black.
You have this power to kill yourself, it's suicide,
and no one can take that back.
There is no better death than suicide, suicide...
There is no better way...

i think this shows why people consider it

why in my opinion?

because they feel that theres no way out, they can't see the wood for the trees. Their family, friends religion or drugs failed to save them from a situation that they see no way out of.

Im not sure on it being attention seeking, but it sure is a cry for help.

Suicide is the cowards way out, an act committed by short-sighted, self-involved people who cannot see past their problems to realise that there is a whole world out there, some of it good, some of it bad, and that life is a gift. Some people have theirs snatched away early, through no fault of their own, and so to take you own is a huge insult.
