    100 usually
its out of 150 so definitely not 100ums, 95 would score somewhere in the region of 140.

Doing q2 ii of june 11 paper

I said heat under reflux as the reaction conditions, but mark scheme says:

distil --> Guidance: Reflux CONs distil mark

    what does the CON mean?
    wrong paper?

nope I meant what I said. the other guy said 95marks = 100 ums, i was saying that the paper ums total is 150, so 95marks would be around 140ums. although having seen that link its probably full ums.

exactly so 95 raw marks could never be 100 UMS because that would mean each mark afterwards would count for 10ums

Could anyone just summarise on how to tackle the infrared and mass spec long answer questions?

    look the link https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/reque...ogy_a?unfold=1
for that year 150 ums was 94 marks

Full Ums is 87+ - depends on each year!

for that year 150 ums was 94 marks
the grade boundary for an A that year was 2+ marks lower than the last few most recent sessions so its probably more than 94 for full ums now.

maybe it was like that because the paper was quite difficult because for maths they do that as well

    work out empirical formula
look at mass spec for molecular ion peak
therefore you can work out molecular formula
state what bonds are present from the infrared spec
look for fragment ion peaks on the mass spec to confirm what the molecule is - ie. it could be branched or straight chained, a mass spec will help confirm this.

thats pretty much it really, and look at other information in the question. for example if its to do with alcohols, do they tell you if its primary, secondary, or do they tell you what it oxidises to etc.

    that would be great
    Just get above 90

And I'm pretty certain that will be above 140 Ums.

Shame OCR don't have Ums converter like AQA

if you're given formation values the arrows go up, if you're given combustion values the arrows go down.
