Overcoming a fear of films

I admit the title's a bit dramatic, but I've never been a fan of films, however, I have decided to try and change.

I've never been one to sit down and watch a film, but my friends have decided enough is enough and have started making me a list of films to watch, it's a sort of bucket list that I have to complete before I graduate uni in 2015.

If anyone has any suggestions, please post them here! I'm very inexperienced when it comes to films and only really have seen Disney films and Harry Potter!

To make things more interesting, I decided to start a blog: http://ellierat.wordpress.com/. As I usually don't enjoy watching films, the blog does make the experience all the more enjoyable, as if I don't like a film, I can always enjoy writing the review!

Please add any suggestions you have . I might add the reviews to TSR too, though I think of them as more of 'alternative' film reviews than your usual type. Anything you think I must see, just let me know, as I probably won't have seen it!

If you were to watch a film, what genre are you looking at? Romantic? Action? Horror? Comedy? Animation?

I'm open to suggestion, but I'm certainly the least keen on horror and action. I think I'd be most willing to watch comedy or some sort of drama. I have a bit of a bias towards British films, but obviously there aren't as many to choose from there!

The Lord of the rings trilogy was my first thought, but as you prefer comedy, I suggest the hangover

There's been some good suggestions in this thread where people are posting their top 10 'must see' films, you could see if any of those take your fancy?

I've heard a lot of Potter fans like The Lord of the Rings, would you say they're comparable? I'm just afraid of being disappointed .

They are very similar, I'm sure you'll love it  I'd advise watching it in parts though, if you don't like watching long films, as each film is REALLY long!

The funniest film I've seen is Bowfinger. Then there are the old Pink Panther films.
The pianist is a must! It's an amazing film, it really moved me, one of if not the best film I've ever seen. It's based on the true story of a jewish pianist living in Warsaw in World War two, he struggles to stay alive and is nearly killed throughout the film. Though he is helped by a nazi soldier in secret, who provides him with food and clothes when he is extremely weak, and does not inform the other soldiers that he is there. He comes back for him numerous times with more food. This nazi soldier helped to save numerous jews during ww2. It's a brilliant film! Some parts are very upsetting though:

The sound of music is a classic imo, it's one of those films you have to see before you're a certain age, though I'm 19 I grew up watching it:

16 going on 17 from the sound of music:

favourite things:

An American in Paris is also a wonderful film, very romantic and stars Gene Kelly (awesome dancer!!):

Inside I'm dancing is also a great film, stars James Mcavoy (great actor) again very moving and very well made:

Atonement is brilliant too, it's about how the love between people is torn apart, when a young girl makes up an awful lie about a main character. Very moving, especially if you've ever been in love:

And Cruel Intentions! Cruel intentions is an incredible film, completely different to most teen films, it has a dark edge to it, the ending is very sad, and it reminds you of the first time you fell in love and of how painful love can be. Best teen film ever made in my opinion. It'll probably have you in tears though:

Blood in blood out is also extremely good, not my usual type of film but I have to say it is one of the best films I have ever seen in my life. Very intense, gripping and interesting. It's about two brothers and their cousin from Los Angeles (they are Latinos), and how things end up in the future completely differently for all three of them than what is expected at the start. I highly, highly reccomend you watch this film, you won't be disappointed in the slightest.

What do you mean a fear of film, what is there not to like about them? Do you just find it boring to sit down and watch them?

My recommendations are my post on the thread  A couple are horror/action/thriller though (28 Days Later, District 9, LOTR and Eden Lake) but they are worthy of a mention to anyone

Haha yeah mine are in there too! A couple of mine probably wouldn't suit the OP if they're not into action/thrillers but I've got a bit of a mix in my list, and The Princess Bride is suitable for everyone!

I'm just really not a film fan, like some people don't like to read books. It's very rare that I'll watch a film unless everyone else I'm with really wants to as I've just never found them interesting, but, I've decided to at least give films a go before I make an ultimate decision, so I'm really trying to get into them!

if you are interested in German history, you'll love the sound of music too  it's based around Austria during WW2, and is also about the growing German influence at the time. Also a great film

LOTR is overrated and quite boring tbh.

A few (must-watch) starters:

Forrest Gump
Titanic
Argo
Schindler's List
12 Angry Men
Casablanca
There Will Be Blood
The Artist
The King's Speech
Black Swan
The Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Taxi Driver
Godfather (I and II)
Scarface
My Left Foot
Goodfellas
Resevoir Dogs
Inglorious Basterds
Shutter Island
Django Unchained
Looper
Se7en
Fight Club
The Departed
Gangs Of New York

This is really weird since we've done the exact same with one of my flatemates... Jane...? :pierre:

Shawshank Redemption, American History X, A Beautiful Mind... could go on.
