    Hi,

Does anyone know if National Insurance is payable whilst a pupil?

I've had conflicting advice with some saying class 2 contributions are not payable as pupillage is counted as 'training'.

    Many thanks,

    D

    Hi there,

The answer is in the Bar Council's Taxation and Retirement Benefits Guidance (click here) See from page 13.

Essentially, you have a choice - either at the start of pupillage or at the beginning of your second six. I opted for the beginning of second six - although, you need to register as self-employed first.
