I would wager there is a correlation between those who have never experienced chavs properly and those who are saying "chav" is a class-slur

    :holmes:
I wouldn't say so. While there are plenty of working class people who don't want to be tainted by the label 'chav' (understandably) so they shout about how it only applies to certain behaviours and how they're working class and they HATE chavs, I think most of the 'chavs are scum and its OK to say that because rich people can be chavs too' stuff comes from middle class people who have only really associated with middle class people. There is a lot more chav hatred on TSR (middle class hub) than there is in my (fairly deprived) home city, although that could be because this is the internet rather than real life.

    This. Strong this.

A friend of mine got jumped on his way home from a night out. 1 v 14. Can remember countless other stories in the papers of people being attacked for no reason and all of the attackers have one thing in common...

I really do hate quoting soap operas and whatnot, but in this case I will. That current story in eastenders with the gang attacking random people for no reason, or just being tossers for no reason, it's a reality in some parts of the UK.

I can't tell if you're just trolling for the sake of it, but it isn't true that all lefties defend bad behaviour in the working class. If people behave illegally, they should be punished by the law. However, if people are just loathed or ridiculed for their clothes, manners or family lifestyles, sometimes that ridicule and loathing is to do with social class and 'looking down' on people. I don't find that particularly nice, leftie or not.
100% agree. The main point is that EVERYONE is born equally. We are all equal. People are socialised differently, this being influenced by the societal structure that they are subjected to. There is no 'choice' in being a chav - socialisation results in them being more likely to become one, and their beliefs become so deep-centred that they are hard to shake off. Before you judge someone, realise that their process of socialisation has been completely different to yours; consequently this does not warrant a demeaning superiority complex to exist. That person could easily be you.

So I am wrong in not liking a part of society that wouldn't think twice of beating me up just for a glance over at them; a group which refuses to work but lives off hard working people's taxes (that includes the working class by the way); a culture that is anti-social and has made large swathes of the country literally a no-go area?

I bet you have never lived with the problem. Otherwise you wouldn't be so naive in thinking that when I say 'chav' I use it to smear the working class. It is actually quite remarkable just how wrong you've got this.
What's your solution then? A form of ethnic-cleansing? I wouldn't put it past some people.

    definitely.
I live in a village, and it's still a huge problem here, it's not limited to cities at all. People get abused on the streets by these knobheads.

It's a drain on the UK, it's a drain on society, it's a drain on our culture. It's just awful.

Most anti social crimes in the UK are committed by these morons, lets be tougher on them!

They stand for the "working class"? No they don't. I'm working class and I despise them.

It's about time we clamped down on these scumbags. All they do is drink or do drugs. They don't have jobs. The way they go on is appalling. It's time we clamped down.

Oh, and the thing that annoys me. "Oh, they need a cuddle. They just need support." No they don't. They need a kick up the arse. They need a prison sentance. They need a reality check.

These people are ruining this country by playing the "were working class" card.
Well said. I have been working class all my life and Chavs are not working class, they are just Oxygen Thieves and a drain on society.

Everyone is born equally, your right. But if you choose to act like a complete ******** for no reason you deserve to be challenged on how you act.

Stop trying to stick up for these scumbags by using the current climate as an excuse to commit crimes and be a tosser.

I agree with everything you say! We need to get rid of these Chavs, including the ones that drive round on their motorbikes or whatever they're called making lots of noise, getting drunk and everything. I just want a quiet peaceful life with nothing to worry about

There is a type of person who gets their kicks out of hanging around on street corners, intimidating and bullying people they don't know, and just generally being a nuisance. We've all seen them. Personally, I cannot stand them, regardless of what caused them to be the way they are. They are a product of damaged society, and that can only be fixed definitively through constructive means, but that doesn't mean I respect them as individuals. I don't respect any bullies.

What is the correct word for these people, if not "chavs"? I get rather tired of being told I am demonising the working class for my lack of better word to describe these idiots.

No logical person will have a problem with you using the word, only those who are looking for something to complain about. I don't actually directly associate it with the working class.

I see your point, but I don't agree that it is their 'choice' to be deviant.

What would your solution be then, instead of incessantly moaning?

I was just stating why I shouldn't have to give an ounce of respect to these degenerates.

My solution? Drastic reductions in benefits. We are subsidising these types and it has to stop.

How on earth is it not their choice to be a tosspot? How? Explain me that please because I really would love to know. "Oh damn, I really shouldn't punch this defenceless drunk person but Cameron would hate it if I didn't"...

You having a laugh mate or what?

And I'd invest in the prison system. Tell them if they don't buck their ideas up that's where they are going. Get them doing jobs such as keeping streets clean etc so that we wouldn't need immigrants to come in and do the **** jobs... But I'm not a fool, this would be a lot harder than it sounds. We'd need a radical change in attitude in society.

Whilst it'd be nice to give these people what they deserve, prison would most likely only exacerbate things since it turns minor thugs into hardened criminals.

Neither do I, and I didn't realise people saw it as a synonym for working class until I had already been using it for years. The problem is that a lot of people do see it that way, some of whom I actually admire quite a lot, which leaves me in a difficult position because that's not how I came to understand it.

    Hmmm...
We have a welfare system for a reason - fundamental morals. Without benefits, these people would be left in severe detriment, especially as our work-shy culture still thrives. There can be no U-turn on welfare. Our country would face a moral outrage. We don't live in a hunter/gatherer society; we have to look after those who are disadvantaged.

The issue with benefits isn't how much people get but the number of people getting them. I do agree with you though, whilst I think the benefit system is essential, it does need a dramatic overhaul.

As for 'chavs' it just annoys me how for some reason our society seems to enjoy rewarding people for bad behaviour. It's like oh you enjoy engaging in anti-social behaviour, let me send you to all these places to keep you from getting bored and doing it again. Yet young people that haven't done anything wrong in there life get nothing.

It would be a kick up the arse for them to get themselves to work and take things seriously as soon as they realise the public aren't funding their lifestyle anymore.
