    Slightly confused about the mass.
If I was using an experiment such as dissolving something in water, is the mass I'd use for the calculation the mass of water or mass of water AND mass of the solid being dissolved?

The m is the Mass of the thing you're heating, so it's whatever the mass is of the thing you're heating. If you're going to heat something with a mass in it, then it's the mass of the water and mass of the solid. Don't forget it's in grams .
