I have started looking for a summer holiday for myself and my boyfriend, and we have decided on Italy. I am particularly drawn to sardinia, but am really confused about which area we should be looking at. We will need to find somewhere cheap (as cheap as sardinia allows anyway), but we also won't be driving so need somewhere where a beach, shops, restaurants etc are nearby. Does anyone have any recommendations?
We would also be wanting to stay in either an apartment or a small hotel, nothing too commercial looking.

I visited Cagliari and Villasimius in the South a couple of years ago, absolutely fantastic! We got cheap flights with Ryanair, but I'm not sure if they still fly there though. Sardinia's just like a quietened down version of the mainland, and even though Cagliari itself was busy in parts I'd recommend renting a car, if you're over 24 they're really cheap there and when you're outside Cagliari they're really quiet. The road to Villasimius was a single carriageway right on the rocky coast, and the seas are crystal clear with a beach every few hundred metres that you have pretty much to yourself. Villasimius itself is a beach resort, but there's still not much English spoke. There was a tonne of small cottage type things in the hills above Viillasimius, we didn't stay there but it did look nice and a medium length walk to the beach every day. We stayed just outside Villasimius and drove to where we liked, we just bought stuff from shops and cooked them in our room to eat though.
If you've got any questions on the south of Sardinia I'd be more than happy to help

Alghero in the North-West of the island, plenty of apartments on the beach... Sardinia doesn't have much of a night life though, at least where I have been but it is okay for a quiet get away
