    Hello,

I am currently a second year student studying Architecture, I have no motivation to continue and would like to change to a Mathematics degree. In doing so I would like to also change university as my current one has no real reputation for Mathematics. I have started emailing other universities about switching to their Maths courses in September 2013, but the problem I have is Student Finance and already using 2 of the 4 years of my financing. I do not see a route where I continue studying Architecture, and have no where near enough financial support to fund a whole year of study myself. My parents have also moved house from England to Wales while I've been at university, so my official home is now in Wales.

So my questions were, is there any financial support Student Finance can offer if I was to start a new degree?
What is the process of changing from SFE to SFW, and would that have any affect on future funding?

    Thanks

    Hi Michael,

As you've stated you won't be entitled to funding for a full 3 year degree unfortunately. We could provide you with a maintenance loan only in your first year then regular funding for years 2 and 3.

You will need to check with Student Finance Wales to find out whether they will accept you as being eligible for funding under the Welsh system. It's probably worth noting that the previous study rules apply regardless of which domicile ie. England, Wales, Scotland etc is providing your finance.

    Thanks,
    Mark-Lee

    Mark,

Thank you for your reply. Are there absolutely 100% no exceptions to this? An extra year of maintenance is great, but there's not a chance I will be able to produce £9000 to pay for the university fees.

So am I just simply looking at dropping out?

    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi Michael,

Yes this is definitely the case unfortunately. The only exception to this rule would be if you had had to leave your course through illness and we would require doctors evidence to prove this.

Have you considered trying to gain entry to another qualification as a year 2 starter? That way you would still be eligible for funding?

    Thanks,
    Mark-Lee

    Mark,

Okay thank you for your help. I had thought and tried that option, however Architecture is so specialised in it's modules that no other course accepts the change to stage 2.

    Thanks,
    Michael
