How long is the summer break? And any other break they get?

I think it depends on the individual university. Most universities I've seen give around 7 weeks holiday (generally two at Christmas, two at Easter and three during Summer). There are a minimum number of hours you have to spend on placement and it has to be the same time as you spend doing theory, so that's why there are very few holidays.

Hi

You have to do a certain amount of hours for both placements and university studying per year ( a total of 4600 hours over the 3 years of your course - 2300 hours of placements and 2300 hours of university studying.... Approximate average week of 37.5 hours ) . For my students midwives they are generally doing a 7 weeks block of university studying and then a 7 weeks block of placements but I think that majority of the English hospitals and universities work completely different from us. You may find that you are doing the amount of hours that you will be doing if you were a qualified nurse/ midwife as you only get 7 weeks holidays as a full-time working nurse or midwife.

Holidays are generally at end of each academic term - Xmas and new year, Easter holidays and then a week at end of the academic year before the next academic year starts again. You'll have a few more weeks in between somewhere ( usually in summer months ) but most students nursing and healthcare staff work over the summer months so you may be either at university or perhaps doing a placement as it depends on how the individual university works out there timetable for the year to fit in the necessary hours required by NMC.
