    Hi,

I'm 17 and would like to do a talk at school to y12/13 (A level) students. Any ideas of 20-30min topics that are related to veterinary in anyway would be really appreciated.
(and preferably interesting, not too much of a basic topic).

    Thanks

If you're appealing to a wide range of students then you can't make it too vet narrow as they'll just get bored/uninterested. Good open topics that would interest everyone as they are in the news at the moment:

    - Horse meat scandal.
-Antibiotic Resistance- the effect on both human and animal medicine.
-TB- how it is controlled and the right step forward.
    - 'One Health' concept. The belief that both humans and animals should consider the one health approach as everything is interlinked.
    - Grand National- pros and cons- mechanics of a racehorse.
    - Pedigree breeding- the right and wrong.

Just a selection of things which would interest a wider audience range. If it was a vet specific audience/animal I would suggest other ones.

Is this a talk for assessment? Is there any assistance on how to select a topic? Is it meant to be informational or something controversial? What is your motive for choosing something veterinary? What are your passions (farm animals, pets, wildlife, other)?

    Skatealexia has some good options.

    Some other ethical ones:
-Euthanasia - is it ok, when should it be done?
-Economics of animal welfare - why do some people pay lots for animals and others pay little? Is it ok to spend £20,000 on pet veterinary treatment but a cow only gets treatment equivalent to the cost of it's meat.
-Wildlife - should wildlife be treated if it can't be released into the wild? what is more important out of veterinary care or habitat protection?

You could also name the different fields a vet works in... Most of the people think they only have a practice and take care of cats and dogs.
