university and friends on a computing course.....

Hi, I'm doing intelligent robotics (like computer science) next year and the main thing im worried about is making friends.
The main problem is i am likely to be the only lass in my group and also 1 of the only people not from the area. Will this mean that no one will talk to me, just this is what i am worrying about.
I am naturally very shy so its not like im the type that can just randomly talk to people but im worried that most of the people on my course will be like this too and so i wont have any friends on my course.....what does anyone think of this.

Yep, it's fine. I was one of only a few girls on a Comp Sci course, and it was fun! Having said that, I'm pretty outgoing so I find making friends easy. But that just shows that not everyone will be shy. You'll be fine!

I did A level Computing and was in a group with 10 lads! Only girl there, which brought more attention I thought. Shouldn't matter what sex you are just as long as you are a nice person and easygoing you should be fine. I made some really good friends from the group :smile:

yeah, i am doing a2 comp and am the only girl in my group....i quite good friends with a couple of lads but i was wondering if that changed at uni....thanks everyone!

True. I know a bunch of maths people and they have to be some of the wildest party-geeks I know. The amount of drugs that seems to go down in an average maths gathering is nuts...

And I do a bloody social science! We're supposed to be the drunken hippies...

You'll be fine, i'm one of 5 girls in a course of about 70 (although that's 3rd year numbers.. started off with about 90-100), and even though i'm not very attractive and pretty shy i've made loads of friends on my course.

Walking in on the first day was the worst - had a meeting for just my section of the year group, opened the door to the lecture theatre full of boys (about 35 of them) which was terrifying, specially as i'd been at an all girls high school. Anyways, one guy shouted at me "omg it's a girl..." so i went and sat with him and said "got a problem with that?" and that was the start of a beautiful friendship.

The only thing to watch out for... is becoming a man yourself. After 2 years and a term spent with this large group of blokes i have found that i laugh at farting and other very male things, and have found myself objectifying women and joining in discussions about things that i *really* shouldn't as a lady.

well after first term and im really happy XD.
There is another girl in AI (intelligent robotics was cancelled as not enough people) and shes also called Kat XD.
Theres 9 lads in AI aswell and i hang out with 7 of them so thats cool ><.
