A free kick instead of a penalty in 18 yard box? Watch

I've always had this lingering thought that in certain situations, when a foul is commited in the 18 yard box, a free kick is given instead of a penalty. This thought was brought up again during the Everton City game when Nastastic stuck his arm out to impede Fellaini. Now in this situation, like in similar situations where I propose a free kick to be given instead of a penalty, it was a foul (a free kick would've been in any other position on the pitch) but a foul that to give a penalty for would've been 'too harsh'- even though a foul should be a foul, there exist this dogma that it needs to be savage enough or cross a threshold to warrant a penalty to be awarded.

So, instead of continously having situations where defenders get away with it, why not have a direct free kick awarded. In addition to this, to swing the pedulum in the favour of the offended team, limit the number of players (including goalkeepers) from both team that can be in the box before it is take to 6 so that the defensive team don't just overload players on their line.

Thoughts? Or share any other outlandish idea that you have.

Pretty stupid idea. If a player tries to impede another inside the penalty area, then it should be a penalty-simple as.

I agree but, 99/100 times, it isn't given whilst the ref would willingly give a free kick for the same thing even if it is a fraction of a yard outside the penalty box.

The fact that they have to give a penalty if it is in the penalty box has a stigma to it that makes them averse to giving it and letting the defenders off. This is an attempt to soothe that stigma.

How is someone going to score with around 10 people just standing in front of the goal??

Well then players would start fouling players inside the box because of this reason.....

    Ridiculous.

We don't need yet another ambiguous rule open to interpretation in a decisive area of the pitch. Refs have it hard enough.
