Would I be mad to choose Queen Mary over York?

This is definitely the main problem if you go somewhere where the majority of the students are asian - most of them will keep to their "own kind", if I may, which will severely limit the number of friends you can make. It's nothing to do with them being asian (and not all asians are like this, of course), if a ton of white people joined asian universities and did the same thing it would be the same problem.

On your current conundrum, personally I would go for Exeter.

I'd rather live in exeter than in york. Not saying york is a bad place to be - it isn't all, I just prefer exeter.

In terms of prestige there's probably no real difference between the two, so other factors like that come into play more.
