    At least 10 people have been killed and 20 wounded in a suicide car bomb attack in the centre of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, hospital workers have said. A BBC correspondent says the scene of the blast near the presidential palace is one of devastation, with body parts scattered across a wide area. Officials said the target was the head of Mogadishu's intelligence services, Khalif Ahmed Ilig, who was injured. The Islamist militant group al-Shabab has said it carried out the bombing.

    At the scene Mohamed Moalimuu BBC Somali, Mogadishu "The scene is one of utter destruction - body parts and shoes lay scattered across a wide area. Government security forces have fired occasional shots into the air to disperse the large crowd that has gathered at the site of the blast. People are shaken - some of them are searching for their loved ones, hoping they survived the explosion. Others have gone to Mogadishu's over-stretched hospitals to find their relatives and friends. A minibus which bore the brunt of the attack has been completely destroyed. I can see its smashed mirror on the ground. Nearby buildings have also been badly damaged, including a restaurant. "

    Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon said the attack was cowardly. Security had improved in Mogadishu since al-Shabab withdrew from the city in August 2011, following an offensive by African Union (AU) troops. But this is one of the most deadly attacks in the coastal city since a new UN-backed Somali government was formed last year.

    What shocks me more is, These despicable humans are even PROUD to admit they carried out this attack, Of which schoolchildren were the majority of the dead;

    "The Mujahideen were responsible for the attack against the non-believer Khalif Ereg," Shebab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage told the AFP wire service. "One holy person took the sacrificial act for the sake of Allah."

    Although terrible the targeting of children is pretty common when it comes to terrorist attacks. Al-Qaeda, Hamas, Afghanistan Taliban, Pakistan Taliban, ect all target children as threatening peoples kids is the best way of causing terror and fear. People tend to be braver with their own lives than those of the people they care about.

    al-Shabab are a particularly nasty group though even by terrorist standards.

    I think they are the worst of them (not that it is a competition).

    They recently killed a widely respected Mufti in Somalia while he was praying inside a mosque (People even linked to Al shabaab distanced themselves from them after this). Robbed 1,000+ sheep of a single farmer, Which would have pretty much been a huge proportion, If not all of his yearly produce to sell on to Arab nations.

    Arresting Quran teachers because they do not support their ideology, They set them free after a few protests, Locals did not want their children indoctrinated.

    They're a despicable group of evil men.

    Well of course they're proud of what they've done - because they're crazed extremists. It does not matter to them whether even babies die and whatnot.

    On another note, over 30,000 children die a day, mostly from preventable illnesses - I think that's the real worry there; terrible, absolutely terrible.

    They are religious fanatics. They don't care who they hurt or kill. They don't care the sex or the age of the victims they just do it. It's unlikely they will change or be swayed otherwise.
