Are there any white men and women on this forum ?

In case you didn't know, the Wolfman is a black male switch hitter from Boston, MA.

That being said, would you ever have a relationship with a black man and/or a black woman ? yes or no. reasons why and why not. w

I will never forget being 7 and my nan asking me to go and get some milk but "Don't go in the Paki shop". I asked my dad what it meant and he told me honestly and I have never wholly liked my nan since. She also dislikes the fact that my cousin is married to a black man.

i'm not familiar with the phrase "switch hitter" but I see no reason why I would even possibly think of not going out with someone just because they were black! If I like someone, and they have a nice personality it doesn't matter what race they are - I find it difficult to stomach that for some race may be a factor in issues like this.

no offence but thats pretty stupid to not like your grandmother for that, they grew up in a different time. Thats amazing i would never dislike family because of their social and political views as long as they were nice

I never said I disliked her. I said I never "wholly liked" her - i.e. I never liked her out-dated and prejudiced views (being a part of her).

Perfectly reasonable if you ask me. I know it would annoy me if one of my relatives was like that.

No. Cultures are too different. What team do you play for?

There's no reason why someone's culture should interfere if they grew up in the same country as you.

Even if their culture was different, what's wrong with a bit of variety? You'll never find someone who's exactly the same as you, and rightly so.

Fair enough. My gran is a bit like that and I won't get into this kind of discussion with her. Because of her views, my brother hasn't told her that he's gay and it bothers me that he has to act differently around her.

I have no problem with people of different cultures and backgrounds being in relationships together - just as long as both parties are aware of and are able to deal with the extra difficuties they are likely to face (ie other peoples' prejudices or their own misunderstandings due to not fully comprehending each others' backgrounds)

one of my friends wouldnt go out with a guy cos he was chinese. there are lots of chinese and japanese people in my school, and they board, so they tend to talk to each other in their own language in groups. I don't blame them for this (being away from home for long periods of time in a foreign country etc.), but it does lead to a lot of subconcious racism in our school which i dislike

Yeah, we had that at my school, and there was quite a lot of thinly veiled racism around against them. My sister is (actually, not sure if she still is, but she was) going out with a Chinese guy at her school though.

In answer to the first question, I am white and I don't think it'd matter what race someone was in terms of having a relationship. Having said that, most of the guys I've been interested in have been white, but that's possibly because where I live, they are in the vast majority, and I simply haven't got to know as many guys of other colours. It's changing a bit at uni though .

I'm white (dammit), and as long as people don't expect me to change my religion etc. then any race is fine too. would prefer a guy with ginger hair though cause I want little red head kids

My cousin says that exactly the same thing happens at Plymouth Uni.

I remember him telling me a while ago that he thought the Far-Easterns at Uni were really arrogant because they shunned contact with people of other races. He also said that he disliked them because he had seen some of them looking up cartoon pornography (which is called hentai, I believe) many times.

This raises the issue: 'Are they being racist because they only socialise with people from their race?' or 'Are we being racist for not liking them because they don't socialise with us?'

Anyway, i am not finding excuses for them.. just some 'could be' views...

It is true, abeit sad, that some chinese and japanese are not fluent in english at all. Henceforth, they don't really know how to start a conversation, much less sustain themselves in one. For those high egos one, I believe they would avoid conversation for fear of making themselves a laughing-stock.

One couldn't really blame them for sticking with their own gang and speaking their native language. How about putting ourselves in their shoes? Imagine ourselves in China, are we more comfortable off sticking with our own gang, speaking english or are we more comfortable off sticking wih the chinese, speaking their language, chinese?

There is no doubt, the former will be preferred over the latter. The same case goes for them.

Yes, it's called hentai. It's sort of a Japanese Cartoon Pornography. I believe it's quite popular in Japan and parts of Asia. (of course i would call those disgusting but to each his/her own. Some people are just being desperate. )

I wouldn't make a sweeping statement to say that they are not or we are not racist. But I believe most of them aren't, only a handful are. Some of them are just being shy. The same holds true for us.

End to end, Lifestyle in university is about mixing around, getting yourself new friends and experience new things. If they won't take the iniative, we could or rather you could

Have an open mind, speak with them

I am a white girl and I have never been out with a Black guy but that isn't to say I wouldn't. I have only had 2 relationships in my life and both have lasted a long time so I haven't really had the chance. I have fancied a few of the black guys in my school, but like I said just havn't been out with them. Where I live the difference in race really isn't and issue.
