The Student Room Group

This probably isnt helpful, because im not really sure about either. i choose none of them: ive gone for UNITE housing, called Central Point, because its right in the centre of plymouth, why dont you check out their website, because the rooms are cheaper for ensuit and just as good: especially discovery Heights, as its right opposite the uni.

Robbins rooms are indeed a bit cell block looking, plain white block walls mostly. But slap up some posters or something and you'll not notice that.

The balcony is a bonus but not all of the rooms in robbins have them so you may not get one anyway. Most of the rooms in all of the halls are pretty much the same and you wont really notice after a bit of decoration but the pilgrim/radnor halls are slightly nicer.

I however would recommend gilwell even though it is slightly smaller and no ensuite rooms. The fact that the halls are open means that it is much more social, once you get in the front door you can get anywhere where as the other halls are closed and you need a different key to get into every corridor.

There are other halls with ensuite that are cheaper because they are not directly on campus such as st terrisa which is about 10 mins walk. But no other with balconies.

can no one provide a picture of robbins ensuite room? would be REALLY helpful as im completely stuck between the two.

Reply 5

also ... DO THE ENSUITE ROBBINS ROOMS STILL HAVE THE BRICKY WALLS / do they have balconies?

Reply 6

Not all of the rooms are ensuite or have balconies. I think it is just random if you happen to get a room on the edge.

A mate of mine who lived there says that the rooms are all the same including the walls and he would recommend pilgrim or radnor over robbins.

The pic on the right of this link is a typical room but I dont actually know which hall it's from.

Isn't Gilwell being converted over to the self-contained flats style of halls found in all the other buildings this year? The open layout is on the way out.

Yes it is changing over the summer. But I think only into four blocks. When you get in the door of any one block you will still i believe be able to go to any floor and corridor. Whereas in the other halls you cant get to any other corridor apart from you own

So basically the hall is being dplit into 4

whats the ratio in robbins halls for male and female. is it 4:4 etc?

Assuming it hasn't changed since I was last there, yes, it should be. I guess some flats will differ, depending on how many of each they have to assign rooms to, but for the most part they try to keep a 50/50 balance.

I currently live in Robbins, have a balcony but no en-suite. The halls are ok, they lack space for the eight of us who live there!!! as there is no lounge / sofa area for us, which i would swap for our balcony anyday as we don't use it much (never get sun on it). Personally I would suggest a different halls with a bit more space for everyone to chill in. But at the end of the day you can have a wicked time in any of the halls, depends what you make of it and who you are living with. Good luck and enjoy your first year!

this is for Andy.

do you have much contact with other students in your halls or the people next to your flat in robbins. i heard it is all blocked off so you need a key to go to the other flats

Reply 13

Very little contact with the flats in our block, only really know the flat above me, kinda sad really. In freshers week, inviting the other flats over for a party is a good idea to get to know them! But yeah, you can't get into them because the key needed is different.

and how many of you are male and female in your flat! i'm hoping for 4:4. really dont want it to be a sausage fest!

That pic is from Radnor.

In my flat of 6 there are 3 guys, 3 girls. Next year my house of 8 is 2 guys 5 girls and 1 spare room at the moment.

our flat was 4 girls, 4 boys... although 1 girl dropped out and it is now 3 girls 5 boys. Most flats are even ratio, although i do know of one flat that is all male, a bit weird tho!
