I'm finding it difficult to think of birthday presents my family can get me. They always ask what I want and I struggle to think of things. I enjoy reading, so I was considering asking for a book. Don't really have any other ideas.

That's the same with me actually. Finding something I want just becomes a chore on special occasions.
I equate the word want with need and so I don't think it's a bad thing at all that you're struggling at all.

If it makes you feel at ease, it's perfectly fine to ask for money so that you can purchase the things you want at a time you want. It's a far more convenient option than being stuck with something you don't necessarily want!

Exactly the same for me need to start thinking because I'm sick of them asking me and moaning when I don't know.
