QUESTION- Do you think unis will let a 16 year old live in the halls of residence??

This is where you are likely to get stuck - some universities have a lower age limit for Medicine. I know, for example, that Imperial require you to be 18, Cambridge require you to turn 18 in the first term etc.

You'll be relatively limited in terms of where you'll be allowed to apply aged 16.

That's perfectly fine, Medicine courses all have to do the same things, so I wouldn't be fussed where i went!

Where do you want to go? But yeah, apart from the social side I wouldn't worry, and there are going to be plenty of medics (and other students too) who don't drink/go out. If you want to have a social life at university you'll have one, it's as simple as that. :smile:

And medicine's a long degree that's busy anyway so it shouldn't make a large amount of difference. I know a third year medic here who still has a social life.

I'm not sure yet, i've been looking into Manchester Uni, but if i got excellent grades (i wish) i might take a shot at Oxford. & Yeah, that's great! It's fantastic to have some encouragement and know that i'm not gonna be the only one :biggrin:

Not that I'm biased because it's my uni, but UEA has a good medicine course... :lol:

I'm arranging to work in a chemist and things like that already, and in the summer holidays after my A2s (i'll be sixteen then) i'm going to try and arrange some more, it won't be ideal but i hope a medical school will recognise that i've done as much as possible in the circumstances :smile:

This is the sort of thing that varies from university to university. For instance, Manchester will, but it's subject to a risk assessment and isn't automatic.

It depends on the university, I have international friends aged 17 at uni, one of them was escorted back by the police to halls on freshers week... After she screamed out she was 17 years old to the bouncers. Uni was not too happy with her I must say.

sorry to ruin it for you but u wont get into uni unless you are 17 and your chances of getting in are very slim. most unis require u to be 18 and if you are not and you apply for deferred entry then it is a bit more difficult to earn a place. sorry for that. and given that u are gonna be done with your a levels at 16 you must be pretty smart so you could apply to top unis and top unis require u to be 18. i just saw your post about oxford, no way they will let u in.

and also your opinion on not drinking and not partying and stuff, i doubt that u will have the same opinion in a few years time. medicine is a long degree and most of the people need to find a way to rewind and have fun. take a year out, experience, relax, get some work experience. no matter how smart you are at the interview your immaturity will show. you might be big and tall or whatever and in a body of a grown up but you are not. it comes from experience, im 5ft 9 since i was 13 and everyone used to say i was really mature and everything. applied for medicine this year and i got in my choices but no way i would have been successful if i had an interview 2 years ago.

There is no rush to get to uni as soon as possible. If you're worried about wasting time between now and then, have you thought about taking a year out now to go abroad for a year and attend e.g. a French school? It wouldn't look like you'd missed a year, you'd have a brilliant opportunity, you'd get pretty fluent in another language and you'd be ready to hit the ground running when you start uni. Being a student can be lonely and I think it would be even harder if you're much younger than the others and you can't join in with what they do in their free time. The medics I know work hard and party hard. You'd struggle to fit in with them if you didn't drink or go to parties.

I have already checked with Oxford, they have stated that they have no age limit on getting into any of their courses, even Medicine. So 'yes way' they could let me in. I'll just have to apply for Universities who accept underage students.

& I doubt my opinion will change, i'm not the kind of person to get involved with anyone who thinks getting wasted is a good way to pass their time or let loose.

I am in no way shape or form immature, i am mistaken for eighteen now because of my maturity, so i doubt that will be an issue.

Please do not tell me what to do or give me false information as it annoys me, your opinion is fine but don't state facts that you don't know to be true.

Finally, that was you, not me. Each person is different. I may be more mature than you are now, or less so. Either way i am determined to become a doctor and to try my best to get there. No matter how old you get you will continue maturing, so yes you are right, i will be more mature and experienced in two years time, hell even in ten years time, but it doesn't mean that i'm not mature enough to apply for medicine in two years.

Don't worry, you didn't ruin it for me :biggrin:

University is for studying and learning, not for getting sh*t-faced and having your face drawn on and contracting STIs. I'd be going there to learn and gain experience, there is plenty things I could do without drinking or taking drugs. But i'm sure if i did choose to drink I could.
It's my personal choice, should universities allow it I will be going once i'm sixteen.

All I was saying is a lot of the events are for those of 18 or over and that your experience would be more fun if your 18 or over. But what do I know right I've only been there.

I guess you could go on and do your masters and then PHD at 19 or just do another degree Its just my point of view.

According to a document I found, there is no minumum age, but some unis (the ones that require patient contact from the start usually it said) would require you to be 18. Therefore, you may not get to choose your top options. Why not do some OU courses alongside working, or something?

This isn't for right now, its for my future.
I'm about to start A levels, and i'm nervous about when i apply for university, i know at sixteen i'll be allowed to live in my own flat but thats going to be expensive!

well everyone is right to an extent you will miss out on quite a lot of social aspects at uni(freshers week will be lost on you). if I were you I would take a year or two out and take your time to scope out unis go on a few open days check out the city's and then go when you turn 18.

now that may sound harsh but i have a reson for this some student's (even at 18) go to uni and are not ready mentally (you probably are but you never know) So if you do get in (I hope you do) keep that in mind . there is another option and this could be a good one for you look at Winchester I know for a fact that they have students of 16+ in halls because they are also a registered A-level center I had a mate that went there for his A-levels he really enjoyed it. just think you can be in a degree and back in the halls with people closer you you own age so it's win win .

As you've already noted yourself most of the universities operate in their own way with regards to >18 students so the best thing to do would be contact each individually and ask about their policy and whether they'd take you in halls.

You should inquire directly with the halls of residence that you are potentially applying to. I'm sure that they would be able to bend the rules for someone who meets/exceeds their typical medical offers!

In regards medicine, I'm not sure you've been informed correctly. As far as I know you need to be 18 for the clinical parts of any medical degree. Most have some limited clinical contact in the pre-clinical years; however you might be able to skip this until year 3 (start of clinical years) when you would be 18, though this would be down to the discretion of the university in question.

There's more information here, it might be out of date though.

Don't know why everyone's putting you down so much to be honest, I think what you're doing is pretty impressive and I think it's partly jealously on their part. And anyway, not all 18 year olds drink, just look at the amount of 'going to uni but don't drink!!' threads on TSR! Have you done GCSE's and what did you get? Also, make sure you do look into work experience - just one thing really isn't going to be enough. Something like a GP surgery may be an option, I shadowed at one when I was 15.
RE your actual question, if they accept you to study on the course at 16, they'll let you stay in halls probably. I think I recall Oxford having guidelines that you have to have someone looking after you as you're technically a minor and they can't be responsible for you so look that up.

I love your courage and the fact that your gonna go ahead to apply for schools even though you'd be 16 after your Alevels. I also wanted to get into school at 16 but it didn't quite work out for me (but then that's just me) so I took a year off but it could work out for you. People are going to discourage you anyways but I wish this doesn't let you down. Try, you might get lucky! + there's no harm in trying. Goodluck and I wish you all the BEST!!
