Hi I've recently been prescribed Dianette. Does this have to be taken on the first day of my period or can it be taken at anytime; if so are there any effects from doing this?

    Thanks

I take Dianette and most contraceptive pills need to be taken between the 1st and 5th day of your cycle, this is because it becomes effective immediatley. If taken not on your cycle, you must take other contraceptive eg condoms, femidoms for a week after taking the first pill, until the pill protects you.

It's just easier to start it on the first day of your period. That's what you're supposed to do. I've started the pill at different points of my cycle and it doesn't matter a whole lot, no, but you might have some spotting and it may take longer for your body to settle down.

If you're not using it as a contraception but as a pill to maybe stop acne, or its compulsory for you to take it while on another pill, but it is advised still for you to take it on the first day of your period due to the effectiveness and side effects of the drug. If you were to tell me what you are using it for, I may be able to help you further.
