Has anybody read "The Bleeding Land" by Giles Kristian? It is the first of a trilogy of which the second, "Brothers Fury" is coming out in May according to Amazon.

I just finished this book and think it's pretty good, its a bit like Game of Thrones although its not fantasy, its historical fiction (set in the English Civil War).

Like GoT it tells the story from the perspective of different characters each chapter, although in this there are only three main characters, Mun, Tom and Bess who are brothers and sister. They are a Royalist family but Tom leaves and joins the rebels, the first book is the back story of why Tom gets driven away and the reasons behind some of the personal feuds.

The story is pretty harsh, there is a lot of violence, including rape and executions so it is not a 'feel good' book but I found it quite immersive especially once the war campaign started and the two brothers are in their respective armies.

Although there are only three characters for whom the book is written from their perspective, there are some interesting extra characters in there and they have been set up well for two further books.

It seems like the author has researched the book well for authenticity so the historical narrative is right. I also think it would work as a TV series and maybe the author has had this in mind when he wrote it.

All in all I would recommend checking it out if you like Game of Thrones. Not saying it is as good as GoT, but it is worth giving it a go IMO, I just picked it up in a train station last week and have powered through it.
