The 'Which uni to pick' thread!!

So I thought it would be a good idea to make a dedicated thread for all those lucky people with a choice of which uni to firm.

That way all the questions and answers and opinions on different courses are in one thread so it's easy to find everything, and then people who aren't happy with their replies or haven't heard back yet don't have it being shoved down their throats the whole time :P

Thank you for making this thread!

My choice is between Sheffield, King's and Newcastle...I am undecided as to whether King's or Newcastle will be my firm choice...

So, King's or Newcastle?

Thanks

Ooh thats tricky!

Personally I'd have said sheffield haha, what is it that you don't like about it?

I think kings is a slightly better dental school, but it really doesn't matter with dentistry so I'd just decide whether you'd rather go to london or newcastle in terms of the cities?

I think newcastle would be an amazing city to be a student in, and london is maybe a bit big.

Thats all just my opinion though, and I think you'd have a fantastic time at any of those 3! Well done on 3 offers

Thank you for the reply! I have no rep left today but I will give you positive rep tomorrow...and sorry about whoever negged you, I don't know why they did that!

I guess King's and Newcastle have always been my top two choices in terms of cities and dental schools...I agree with you that Newcastle is a great city andi think I am leaning towards that at the moment, although I've always lived in the north so I'm tempted to see what London is like haha!

Thank you, yep no idea why i was negged either :/

Well good luck with whatever you choose
I was lucky enough to get 3 offers
My choices are sheffield, Bristol and Cardiff. I'm finding it really hard to pick between sheffield and bristol due to the fact they are very similar! They are even the same distance from where i live ahaa HELP !!

I really like them both but is there any feature of either which the other doesn't have? They both have an amazing dental school so tbh i'd be happy at either
Cheers for any responses !

Anyone have any opinions on St Andrews vs Queens Belfast for medicine?

I'm having trouble deciding. Queens is at home (family here, cheaper) and St Andrews is away (exciting/independent, I like the uni better too).

Anyone even have any pointers for *how* to decide?

Hmm I don't know loads about bristol or cardiff but sheffield is lovely
They're big on the elective which is good, and people seem to love the accommodation! One slightly negative thing is the lack of holidays after first year, but that might be the same for all dentistry courses.

This is the dentistry forum but it doesn't make any difference really

Id say definitely st andrews! At belfast everyone seems to be local and go home all the time and thats not what uni should be about! If you're not at home you'll probably be forced to be more sociable, meet a wider range of people and become more independent

Again dont know bristol that well but I think the dental school is possibly a tiny bit better, though I think the city is more important. They're both great for the arts and culture and both lovely cities  Liverpool is more northern (obviously) and gritty and has a fantastic music scene!

A feature for sheffield is the outreach programme in years 4&5 which is three 6-7week blocks working a full 4 day week (Friday is a day off) in a GDP or salaried post. For me this is one of the main reasons I'm going to firm sheffield

If you're choosing between Bristol and Sheffield I would say definitely Sheffield...this is all my opinion obviously but I think Sheffield is the better dental school, better city, better reputation, possible more opportunities...hope this helps, I know how difficult it is to choose as I'm in a dilemma myself!

You get paid? Or is it just free work for experience?

I'd go with King's, only because I have fallen in love with London as a city! It's so diverse and exciting  Both are great, though.

Thank you for the reply! I'm really torn between them...I hear great things about London but I'm quite scared to be honest cos I come from quite a small quiet town...would you say it's relatively easy to become used to how big and busy London is and the tube and bus system and stuff?

Work experience to build up your clinical skills. By salaried post I mean a community dentist & other hospital based specialisms. Most places have outreach but they are often a single day each fortnight

Yeah, I'd definitely say so! I'm scottish and live in quite a small town and go into Glasgow a lot, despite not living there - but Glasgow is tiny compared to London. I found whilst London was busy, the tube is really easy to understand, especially with apps you can get on your phone which tell you any changes you need to make . I also found the tube is a very efficient way to travel - most people just stand on it because it's really quick and can take you from A to B in a matter of minutes.

I'd say the cost of living in London is the biggest factor you should consider, although students living in the capital get a larger student loan to help with that.

If you haven't, I'd recommend that you go to London for a few days to see if you like it or not, and the same with Newcastle. I think it'd definitely help you make up your mind.

Good luck, but most of all well done for being in such a privileged position of having three universities to pick from!

I'd pick Bristol, if they are both that similar choose the one in the nicer area.
