Is it true that some dentists here in the UK would extract a tooth instead of fixing it which might take quite a long time? I was told by a student dentist that only dentist specialising in that area could do canal treatment and that I might need to get my tooth extracted just because of a cavity.

I never experienced anything like that myself, but I've heard from someone I know that this can very often be the case. :sadnod: Apparently, when it comes to extractions dentists get paid by the tooth (this is all only what I've been told) so some morally shady ones might look to extract anything that has a slight problem. You definitely want to be careful: the person who told me this said a dentist had extracted 'half of my mouth' before he snapped and stopped him.

I had to go see an emergency dentist because I had a very bad abscess and he told me "Your tooth can definitely be fixed, don't let any dentist tell you they've got to remove it. If they do, just walk out." He told me that because they were paid the same amount for extracting a tooth or saving it, many dentists will just remove it.

Another time, and this was with my regular dentist, I had a problem with one of my teeth and he told me that he was going to have to remove it. All it took for me to say was "really? I didn't think it was was that bad... Is it not possible to save it?" and he said "well... I'll try but I can't make any promises." I've still got that tooth today and have had no problems since.

Don't let them fob you off with the whole, "we can't save this tooth because you're an NHS patient, why don't you become a private member and I can make sure it's done properly". I've never been back to that dentist.
