I drink too much. I know that it is not doing me any good. I would like to ask those who drink too much like me why do we do this when it does not do us any good but the opposite?

I know what you mean. Alcohol depresses me so much that one minute, I'm happy and bubbly and the next minute, I start to be sad about the most trivial things. I tend to avoid it when I can and I do drink responsibly - but even once in a blue moon, it still has that effect on me.

It's a depressant, that's probably why it dampens your mood.

Edit: we drink otherwise we risk getting shunned by students from uni. They will look down on you if you don't drink or so it seems like that. That's maybe false but that's why I go out and drink but even a little bit of beer pushes my mood balance the other way.

To be fair I think a lot of people our age probably drink too much.... I gave it up for about 6 weeks and it wasn't easy. I guess it showed me that sober nights out in town aren't as much fun and its not easy being the only one not drinking. I guess the reasons I drink are to relax, socialise and have fun... But if I'm entirely honest I sometimes use it almost to let me be the person I'm not when I'm sober and to let go a bit, this sounds bad but I probably even use it as an excuse to do things I wouldn't normally. I'm not a particularly heavy drinker and probably drink less than once a week during term time but I do get drunk quite quickly. Yes it's not good for us but try not to worry too much, I'd say you're in a majority!
