    So basically, what is an ionic equation? My textbook is quite vague.

    eg. Write the ionic equation that descries the precipitation of silver chloride, showing state symbols.

    An Ionic equation is one where ions are shown, rather than the whole reaction - often spectator ions are also ignored.
    I realise its not the most useful response so here's a couple of links which'll do a better job than me

    How would you know the charge on a molecule? :confused:

    For monoatomic ions - look at the group they are in.
    If they're in group 1 they'll have a 1+ Charge.
    If they're in group 2, a 2+ charge.
    Group 3: 3+
    Group 6: 2-
    Group 7: 1-

    As for polyatomic ions the sum of the oxidation states = the charge.

    Ag+ + CL- ---> AgCl

    As a question, this just does not work ...

    An ion is a charged particle.

    A molecule is a particle that carries no charge.
