One thing that bugs me is the fact that the new series are so reliant on recurring characters to help the story along. As much as I like the "Paternoster Gang", their frequent appearances are actually starting to bug me, it's almost as if they're using them as a crutch to lean on when they require a bit of comic relief, drama, etc. Not to mention the fact that Strax, as loveable as he is, is starting to be milked dry, the same applies to the "EVERYTHING IS GOING TO EXPLODE UNLESS WE SOLVE IT USING THE <Insert Deus Ex Machina>"-style series finale. We get it, the world/universe/multiverse/Doctor and the multiverse is about to die, but can we please just draw it back now? Otherwise, the tension that is intended to be generated from this problem is wasted.
The same also applies to some of the classic monsters, they're milking some dry and refusing to invent new ones or raid the archives for old ones to use instead. Yes, they may be classic monsters/villains, but sometimes it becomes an irritation that the same few appear on an almost annual basis. Except for the Daleks. The Nation estate would never let the BBC use the Daleks again if they didn't appear at least once per series.

Ranting aside, I love this show dearly and hope that the 50th will be just as good as they've made it out to be.

Well I think the Beginning Boxset, which has the first 3 serials with William Hartnell is worth having. Some of it hasn't aged particularly well and can be a bit slow. But the very first episode, An Unearthly Child, still holds up even today. It also includes the first ever Dalek serial.

Others that may be worth checking out are 'Spearheads from Space' which is Pertwee's first ever story and 'Caves of Androzani' which is Peter Davison's last.

I don't have the deepest depths of Classic Who knowledge, so there may be someone else who could give some recommendations.

Depends what style you like! I would recommend

    Jon Pertwee:
    ------------------
Spearhead from Space (in a box set called Mannequin Mania with the follow-up story Terror of the Autons)
    Inferno
    Mind of Evil
    The Daemons
    The Three Doctors

    Tom Baker:
    ----------------
    Terror of the Zygons
    Planet of Evil
    Pyramids of Mars
    Seeds of Doom
    Masque of Madragora
    Robots of Death
Talons of Weng Chiang (I think unfortunately only available in a Revisitations box set now)
    Horror of Fang Rock
    City of Death

There are other good ones too, but any of those stories gives you an idea of what the respective Doctors were like. (N.B. City of Death isn't typical drama - it's played a lot for laughs but is very good!)

Hard not to recommend my absolute favourite childhood serial. It's cheesy as hell, and absolutely hilarious, but I used to love it. Has like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade puzzle rooms and stuff towards the end. It's great fun.

Jon Pertwee, in fairness, was awesomely grumpy in it.

Want a lovely summary of Dr Who in time for the 50 year anniversary show?

It's 2 hours long, so brew a huge cup of tea, sit back and enjoy.
