Chemistry Paper 1 Controversy

Did you guys notice that we didnt have a periodic table included in the Chemistry Paper 1?

I have subscribed to the IBWorldGeeks forum and this is what I saw (read the bolded part):

um...no offense
the periodic table is included in the data booklet given to you in paper 1, 2 and 3...
the reason why IB doesnt want to include it in the examination paper itself is to save papers

you get a perodic table

our ib coordinator initially said that we don't get it

then after we're done P1 and P2, he's like " whoops, there's a note attached that says you get perodic table"

and he handed back our tests and gave us perodic table

LOL:biggrin:

you're not allowed a data booklet for paper 1
Reply 4
our school gave it to us anyways..

same here

they just said " we trust you on your honsty to look only at page 5"

Like ragz201288 said, data booklets aren't allowed for paper 1.

I've been hearing different things all day and I'm pretty sure that we weren't suppose to use our periodic table for paper 1 (apparently, people sent emails to the IBO or something) and that any questions that required a periodic table will be taken off (repeated many, many times in the other threads).
Reply 7
well other pages are no much use anyways in that paper
Reply 8
yea, kinda gay taking those perodic table questions off

i knew all the answer to those

and like i said, our IBC trusted us to not look at other stuff beside table 5 in the data booklet

No, really? Have you tried looking at ANY other thread on chemistry in here?

Erm, not really. If you have checked the past papers, there are copies of periodic table repinted on 1st page of every P1, as we are specifically not allowed data booklet (and GDC, for that matter) on P1.

I can only genuinely believe that this is a prank joke. If not, your IBC should get fired, honestly...

Man, it's not about looking at other pages, as they indeed were useless, but it's about the rules of the exam which have been massively violated all around the world, and since IBO is all about its 9silly) rules, I wonder what they will do :P

Anyway, judging by the fact that there were students who got a table and those who did not, I'm guessing that this exam was the most cheated in whole IBO histroy

Im really pissed because people are talking about some 5 questions that would be removed but the thing is, I atleast want to see the table in front of me all the time. In many questions it's good to know what ion an atom forms, and it can directly bee seen from the table!! The whole point of P1 is to know how to interprete the table, and use that information in probably most of the questions!!

I told you they change plans to save papers now because of enviromental issues...thats why they do it this year not the other years..
as far as i noe may05 nov05 may06 past papers and markschemes will be electronically distributed to the schools NOT on papers as it used to be.

I don't think so, simply because no IBC coordinator was informed of that and it was a clear mistake of IBO not to print periodic table in P1 question sheet. Also, removing one page from a paper doesn't save that much, does it? Though I guess, they could squeeze the P1 on less pages just by cramming the questions - there is so much free space wasted...

And how do you imagine saving paper by electronical distribution of papers as still smn will have to print them to hand them out to students? LOL Anyway, I think IBO is very pround of its distribution facility, with all those plastic sealed bags, etc.

for paper one booklet is not allowed... even GDC ... it's so wrong that even though IBO sent kind of notes (don't know exactly) to the school's coordinators about the periodic table, still in some schools students were given them! i hope that the questions which required the use of table will not be included, it would be so unfair!

Our IB coordinator said that the IB thought about just letting us use the table in the data booklet BUT they said it wouldnt be fair cuz not all the schools heard about this so we would have to do it without one.

Apparently many schools got the table and this is really unfair.. some of us had to do the entire paper without one.

I am kind of upset to hear that some schools gave their students the periodic table, or that they even allowed them to change their answers afterwards. Everyone at my school did paper 1 without the table.

Exactly the same. It is completely unbelieveble. I did without it and took me about 10 minutes to do my own table to answer question such us the one related the oxygen or other ones. INCREDIBLE!!!

That just makes me really upset, since our IBC read us a note from the IBO that said explicitly not to give periodic tables out, that the mistake would be taken into account when marking.
I think not having a p.table influenced more than just the questions directly related to it, I almost always use it to check my answers and use it even in questions not directly related to it.
Hope the IBO takes that into account as well. I also would not like tham to invalidate the P1 since i did not di as bad on it and i did not do as well on the paper 2

Seriously tho, none of the questions required the periodic table. Atomic numbers were given to you and no questions on mass were there... i dont understand the need to delete questions etc. if they delete questions it is unfair to the ppl that had to use 2 more minutes than required or watever.

altho the fact that some ppl did get the table puts an entirely diff. perspective on the issue...
no data booklet for p1, that's why there has always been a periodic table provided... But as far as I am concerned, they would invalidate or taken into consideration of the questions that requires a periodic table... So no worries... IB makes mistake quite often.
