I'm looking for a new laptop for uni, and I have to say I don't know very much about them at all. I'm looking for for something reasonably lightweight and with a good battery life so I can take it to the library but a decent enough screen to do all my essays and watch movies on. I don't game or anything like that, but would like something reasonably speedy for streaming and stuff.

    Depends on budget?
how many hours of battery life are you expecting?
what do you consider lightweight 2.5kg, 2kgs, etc?
    any multitasking?

    Any preferences like makes, etc?

Lol, I knew I forgot something. I'm looking to spend £500-£700, but I can go up to £800ish if it's one that's available from John Lewis cos I can get a good discount. I don't really know about weight, I have no idea what a 2kg laptop feels like, I just want to comfortably carry it around at uni with my books. I don't have any preferences about make, I don't like macs but I couldn't afford one anyway!

I found these, which look pretty good? Although the second one doesn't have a disk drive, I can't decide how much that would actually bug me.

Well do remember that going with ultrabooks come with disadvantages, the processors are weaker versions of their laptop version which are themselves weaker versions of their desktop counterparts.
As you said some don't come with a optical drive and come with issues if something on the inside goes wrong. Also remember they are more costly compared to something which is slightly heavier around 2.4-2.6kg.

You could get a external optical drive about £15-£20 for a decent one.

I have a vaio and I don't have any problems with it. It does all that stuff like writing essays, streaming etc. only thing that happened was hard drive failed, but cos I hadn't had it a year, Sony picked it up, repaired it and sent it back to me for free. Wasn't a problem cos I had all my music, pictures etc backed up on external hard drive but might have annoyed me if it had. I think it's reasonably light and my version is less than your budget. But yeah, I do recommend it

That being said, I had a Dell die after 12 months, whereas I've had a asus netbook for knocking on 3 years and apart from a little piece of plastic cracking (which in all fairness is my fault) it's been great.

im getting a Toshiba Satellite laptop, its like £1100 or something but im probably gonna get it in the christmas sales so it should be cheaper. it is quite heavy, but huge screen, awesome graphics, really good process, lots of memory. this will last you for your entire Uni life, because it is really reliable and fast. plus, its easy and cheap to upgrade.

Well, my Dell is holding quite good and it's already been 2 years since I got it except I had few blue screens due to drivers conflicting but now don't get them any more.

Its just in the last few years they have gone done hill......... only their business range is worth it and very reliable. General consumer lines are just poor quality, even at times a rip off........only reason people are buying is because they believe its the same company that it used to be years ago which it isn't, they even ruined Alienware, bought it and then ruined it with crazy prices and poor reliability.

Okay, so to be sure, which laptop manufacturer is the best? Not to mention Apple and I don't have any interests in purchasing Apple production..

In terms of general reliability its changes quarter to quarter and individual experiences differ.........but lenovo, samsung and toshiba are generally good.
