Completely depends what you want to go on to do. If you want to go into to maths/physics/computer science/ medicine areas you will need HL maths, and would have to work hard as most would want a 6. If you want to go into one of the other sciences, economics/ business studies etc then SL would probably be very useful, but if you are definitely not going to need maths then go ahead and boost your overall IB score with studies

Medicine does definitely not need HL maths - SL maths, or even maths studies for most universities is perfectly fine

Although it isn't always stated as necessary, it is generally looked favorably upon, and may give a slight advantage as long as you score reasonably.

    Just googling a couple:
Definitely worth checking for individual universities. Economics at several require HL maths

    E.g. Southampton

BSc Economics (L100), BSc Economics and Finance (L1NH) and MEcon Economics (L101)

    International Baccalaureate

36 points, 18 at Higher Level, including at least 5 points in HL Mathematics
    Sheffield

    BA Economics (L100) 35 points
BSc Economics (L101) 35 points including 5 in Higher Level Maths
BSc Economics with Finance (L1N3) 37 points including 6 in Higher Level Maths
BSc Economics and Mathematics (LG11) 35 points including 6 in Higher Level Maths
