    Hi

I am currently in year 11, however having taken my GCSEs a year early I am now in my first year of AS levels. I am hoping to apply to study medicine at university, and I am studying for A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, German (General Studies, Critical Thinking and the EPQ - for AQA Bacc). My grades are generally high (12A* gcse and predicted AAAAAA AS) and I'm thinking of applying to places like: Oxford (?), Imperial, Birmingham, Nottingham, Bristol, Durham, UCL, Kings and Cardiff.

I have already done a fair bit of work experience and am currently considering undertaking one of the Open University short courses, either in:
Molecules, medicines and drugs - SK185
Elements of forensic science - S187
Human genetics and health issues - SK195

I thought it would help show my interest in the science behind medicine.

Have any other prospective medical applicants completed one of these courses? Was it worth it? Did it help? Did you mention it in your personal statement/did they ask you about it in interviews and seem interested? How much of your time did it take up and did it distract from your A level studies? Also what do you have to do for the assessment - it says a single piece of written work - so an essay?

The courses cost over £400 each so I want to be sure! I was also wondering whether I should wait until next year and use it towards my extended project - could it count?

    Thanks!
