Hey guys, just wanted to know your thoughts on this, something that has been troubling more for a little while.

    Who do you RESPECT more?

Person 1) Junior doctor: got straight into medical school at say Warwick. Lots of great extra-curricular stuff and related work experience. Now a Junior at a good hospital, specialising in something technical say kidney surgery.

    Currently earning £60,000 a year.

Person 2) Salesman: After leaving school worked very hard at sales based jobs. Finally found an opportunity selling marmalade in bulk for a farmer, the marmalade is of very good quality. Managed to sell extremely well and entered the product into leading supermarkets. He makes commission on his sales.

    Currently earning £1,000,000 a year.

So guys, who do you respect more? And why? Would really appreciate some comment and would be happy for some discussion.

Whichever one was happiest and most passionate about whatever they do.

Each is clearly very talented in their own way.

If I needed marmalade, probs the sales guy. If I had kidney failure, probably the doc.

Neither, I don't just automatically respect those who have been successful in life.

Each have achieved something noteworthy, well IMO. For example I would respect each of them more than someone claiming benefits because they are too lazy to find a job. Someone that puts absolutely no effort into whatever it is they do.

So what do you respect? Just asking a general question here

    I equate respect with trust.

I don't know them, so I don't trust them. However, I would sooner trust a doctor over a salesmen.

haha! I really don't know much about medicine. Can we change him to say 30k or perhaps someone that is more senior and is on 60k? After specialisation ?

I think that's more of an issue of those I don't have respect for.

From knowing absolutely nothing about them, and by making a judgement just by the information you provided, I'd say the doctor

However, you can get some very arrogant doctors, and some really nice salespeople, so it really depends on the person themselves

Can I ask why you have chosen the doctor? Based on the information I have provided.

What if they are equally nice people?

The kind of person they are. All you've told us is that they are hard-working which is respectable but I don't know how they treat their family, friends and others around them. Greed can motivate people to be hard working but too much can be really ugly and I would lose respect for that person if the were just motivated by money and material goods.

I think its hard to say exactly what is respectable, I think it's a make up of lots of different attributes and actions that a person makes, not a straight forward decision. It's not black and white (ie clear criteria) at all.

Doctor. IMO, choosing a career in saving lives is more respect-worthy than selling marmalade.

It's more because I hold doctors in quite a high regard, and their line of work is about saving lives, whereas the stereotype for salespeople is that they can be slimey etc.. so it's more about the respectability of their job, as opposed to the person

If I knew both people, I'd respect whoever deserved it more. That being said, most people I know get my respect

I love how you emphasised "After leaving school worked very hard at sales based jobs."
Whereas for the junior doctor, all you said was "got straight into medical school at say Warwick"
    Biased much?!!
They're both talented, and both had to work extremely hard to become what they are now.
To answer your question,I'd respect the junior doctor more simply because he works harder now,and does night shifts just to save people's lives compared to the salesman, who probably doesn't even need to do night shifts at all! -.-
