I'm writing an essay and instead of writing 'this kept the focus on the message the author was ' is there another word I can use instead of message or meaning to say what the author was trying to tell the reader? Thanks

Authorial intent (as stated above)
'the idea that the author was trying to promote...'
'the author was attempting to portray the message/notion of...'
Those are just a few of the ones I regularly used in my english assignments.

Authorial intention/Authorial intrusion/Authorial intervention.
